Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to share this with others who might have the same soft drink addiction causing your weight problem that I have. For years I've been a diehard, heavy Cherry Coke drinker (at least 5-6 cans per day, often more than that) but just the other day I discovered Coca Cola Zero - and dig this, it has 0 calories, 0 fat, 0 carbs, 0 protein, and only 40mg sodium; not to mention it tastes great too. Anyway, I've tried diet pops in the past and their taste has always made me gag, but here's what I think is a nice alternative to Cherry Coke - I mean, I'd enjoy drinking it even if I wasn't trying to lose weight.

Hey NightOwl....glad to hear you're doing well!!  I've never been a big soda drinker, but every couple of days, I really need a carbonation fix.....something about the bubbles really satisfies my thirst.  I'll have to give that Coke Zero a try next time I crave a soda.  Thanks for the tip!

Something I do, since I do try to limit my sodium, is to buy sodium-free seltzer, which is really cheap, by the way.  Then I'll add a packet of Splenda artificial sweetner and 1-2 tsp of vanilla extract....it's a good way for me to satisfy a sweet craving with no calories or sodium.  You can also try other extracts like almond or lemon.....for a gourmet soda effect!  Rose

NightOwl...

I was the same way...I was easily drinking 6-12 cans of COKE or PEPSI (which ever was on sale) each and every day up until 16 days ago.

I have completly stopped drinking soda's. I did buy Coke Zero, and it definetly doesn't have as bad of an aftertaste than diet coke, but the 12 pack I bought is still sitting in my fridge minus the one can I had tried back on the 2nd of Sept.

I haven't found any substitution that I really like. Even crystal light, which i also purchased just doesn't taste very good to me.

It's the whole after taste thing that I get. Even with the splenda products they have...I just..well...yuk lol

so for me..it's water..lots of it and coffee or hot tea.

I am glad you discovered an alternative to cherry coke...WTG!!

Hi Rose and NavyWife - thanks for your replies!

Rose - that self made pop you mentioned sounds interesting, where would you find sodium-free seltzer? Is that something from a pharmacy, or a grocery store, or a health food store or what? I never heard of it before. Also, does Splenda (or any other artificial type of sweetener) give it a bad aftertaste? Just wondering because I usually can't tolerate that well, Coke Zero is the first type of sugar free drink I've actually liked, those diet pops I've tried in the past have only made me gag.

NavyWife - sorry to hear Coke Zero didn't cut it for you, I tried it in desperation after drinking nothing but boring old plain water all day long and knowing myself well enough to know I couldn't handle that as my only drink for long - I don't mind having water to drink along with food (at least there's something with a little flavor there to taste), but not caring for the taste of coffee or tea, Coke Zero just seemed a much better tasting choice than diet pop or Crystal Light (I got heartburn from Crystal Light).

Sorry to seem so fussy here, ladies - I miss Cherry Coke a lot, but I thought Coke Zero tasted alot better than any other alternative I've tried and I know that if it doesn't taste good, I won't be able to stick with an alternative for very long at all.

I agree NightOwl....trying to eat or drink something that really doesn't appeal to you doesn't work for very long, and I know for me, it's about a different way of living.  Finding something that will work for the rest of my life.

The seltzer water is usually in the soda aisle at the grocery store.  It usually comes in the smaller 1 liter bottles, and on sale, I usually get 5 for $2.  They also have a lot of flavored seltzers with no calories that you may enjoy, like cherry, strawberry, etc.  They are usually a little too sweet for my taste.  I also have a problem with artificial sweeteners sometimes.  I've been using Splenda, but I only use a small amount....otherwise it tastes too "artificial."  I know I used Equal before and always it, so I'll pick some up tomorrow when I go grocery shopping and give it a try again.....I'll let you know the results!

Something new I tried today was some cut up pieces of pineapple in my seltzer which worked well....it's fresh pineapple that is exceptionally sweet, so I didn't need any other sweetener.  I keep trying to think outside the box to come up with things I'm excited to eat or drink as it makes it much more enjoyable, and not so much of a chore or sacrifice....let me know if you come up with any others!!

Hi Rose,

Thanks for your reply here. Next time I go to the grocery store I'll have to give that a try. I know what you mean about it (weight loss) needing to be about doing things you can live with and making it enjoyable rather than a chore. Lets face it, if something sucks, a person's not going to do it for very long.

BTW, I think thats wonderful advice you gave on trying to "think outside the box" there. You have to do your own experimenting and find out what's right for you and what you think is best for your own life and who cares if its not what someone else recommends.
