Why are Americans so fat? It's a pretty bold question, but one that many people would like answered. A recent article pulished on CR4: The Engineers Place for News and Discussion shed a little light on something that many Americans don't realize that they're consuming, high-fructose corn syrup.

Ever since I first heard about HFC as well as other evils of corporate cost-cutting, preservatives, sweeteners and this, that, and the other thing (!) I've been looking at the list of ingredients.  Among other things, I've discovered that it's impossible to buy tomoato soup in any of the grocery stores I go to, and the only place I can be assured of finding a decent cold breakfast cereal at any of those stores in under 15 minutes of scrutiny is Trader Joes.
So it's lead to some changes in my family's grocery habits -- today I'm attempting to make tomato soup in a crock pot, wish me luck -- but so far, so good.  There hasn't been much whining about the lack of sugary cereals for quite awhile now. :)

I wish the mainstream media would give more extensive coverage to nutritional education; I like to think that if the average person were more aware of what they were putting in their mouths and how it affects their health, they'd take more care.

I suppose he reason we don't hear more about it is that the media advertises products made using the HFC, and the revenue generated is important to the media concerned.  The media are paid to advertise the "atrtractive features" of the products concerned, and to advertise the less attractive features might cause the clients concerned to take their business elsewhere.
