We're often warned off drinking excessive amounts of coffee from nutritionists and dietians, but I was wondering if decaf coffee is a real alternative? Is it better to drink decaf or are you inviting a whole lot of new problems nutritionally speaking?
I normally have 2 - 3 cups of normal coffee a day but as it's been so cold, have been feeling like more but don't want to have the full strength stuff so after my third cup for the day, I switch to decaf. I just wondered if there was any merit to doing this (I also drink a couple of herbal teas a day)
Does anyone have an opinion on this?

I don't have an opinion on whether coffee is good or bad for you, but I can tell you that decaf coffee is not free of caffeine. At best, it gets between 1/3 and 1/2 of the caffeine out.
Hope that helps a little..

Caffeine, like many things, is okay in moderation. Two cups a day of caff should do no harm. If you drink decaff the remainder of the time that would be better.
But better still would be to drink more water. Caffeine is a mild diuretic, so you need to replace that hydration you've lost.

| I've just looked it up on the USDA database - instant decaff has 19% of the caffeine of instant regular. That's a fifth. In as much as you should limit caffeine (e.g. to avoid raised blood pressure etc.) then decaff is better than coffee in that regard.
