| Fiber One is awesome. I started eating it because I read a high fiber diet is a key in weight loss. Each 1/2 cup serving has over half your daily fiber needs. Each serving also only has 60 calories, 1 gram of fat, 0 grams trans fat, 0 grams saturated fat,0 grams sugar, and 2 grams of protein. Ever since I started eating this cereal for breakfast I have been regular. I will have to say, it does kind of look like cat food, but if you can get past its appearance and kind of odd texture it's really pretty good. Take my challenge. Eat this cereal and just try not to love it!

| I was assuming that 60-calorie serving was without milk (?)

I admit to loving this cereal too! I bring some to work, and a couple of people made fun of me because of the unusual appearance... but even one person agreed it actually tastes a tad sweet in a branny, nutty sort of way.
I also like to put it in yogurt for crunch! Yum!
And, to answer your question, Nir - yes, 60 calories is for 1 serving of cereal alone. Most cereals, even the "healthy" ones are higher - and this one has the benefit of being loaded with fiber.

I prefer a cereal with a bit more protein and a fewer artificial sweeteners (if memory serves, Fiber 1 has aspartame as the sweetener). I would prefer something with a higher sugar count as long as it is from something natural like honey. But I know we all have different priorities I still manage to get an average of 30g of fiber a day from more natural, whole foods.

I don't have any figures for Fibre One,
however I have figures for wheat bran (this is not a brand name - I'm just talking about bran on its own) and when I first analysed those I was pleasently surprised with the protein content: 100g of bran has 14.7g protein and 212 calories, so 27.7% of calories are from protein.
JillyBean, what is your cereal of choice?

If I do eat cereal (which isn't very often, as I've found it difficult to meet my nutrition and calorie goals with cold cereal), I opt for brands that use natural sweeteners. I'm a big fan of Kashi cereals. 1 cup of Kashi's GoLean has 140 calories, 13g protein (for a total of 29% calories from protein), and 10g fiber (although I believe a portion of the fiber is insoluble versus soluble). According to the site I just checked, the Fiber One has 7% calories from protein (2g protein and 60 calories per 1/2 cup), not 27.7%, so I guess the Fiber One cereal is not directly comparable to wheat bran.
Not here to argue--as I said, we all have different priorities (although with the same goal of reaching/maintaining a healthy weight!).

WOW I had no idea that Fiber One had artificial sweetener in it! But I checked the label, and you are right. I'm a little disappointed because in general I try to stay away from aspartame (although I admit not religiously). I'd say my second favorite cereal is the Kashi GoLean you mentioned... but now maybe it is my first choice! Shame on me for not reading labels more closely!
I do admit though that the high fiber content of Fiber One is still appealing... 28g of fiber per 1 cup of cereal (120 calories). That's over 100% of the recommended daily amount for the average person - according to the box. To compare with the protein in Kashi GoLean - Fiber One has 4g in one cup. But like I said, I'm usually eating it to make sure I get my fiber in, not necessarily protein.

Kashi gets lots of mentions. I don't think I've seen it here in the UK though so I can't try it.
In my cupboards I do have a Shreddies clone, a Wheatabix clone, some generic Muesli and also Porridge Oats. but I'm with JillyBean - cereal doesn't often fit within my goals. In fact I'm generally staying away from grain at the moment, preferring vegetables (including starchy ones), fruits, legumes and nuts/seeds.
As for artificial sweetners - one my 'junk food' treats at the moment are flat wafers and wafer cones (at 6 and 12 calories respectively). They are both artificially sweetned. They get the junk classification though for being mostly refined white flour and vegetable oil! At least I use these with healthy fruit sorbets rather than real ice-cream. Yes, fruit! best natural sweetner there is

I also enjoy cereal every now and then. My two favorites were already mentioned. I regularly chose Fiber One Honey Clusters (160 cal/1 cup, 13g fiber, 5g protein) or Kashi Go Lean Crunch (190 cal/1 cup, 8g fiber, 9g protein). Both taste awesome to me!

Nir,
I have seen Kashi products in the Uk, you can get them in health food shops or sometimes in the special health food aisle's of Tesco's, but they tend to be quite pricey. I am a bit of a cereal addict and tend to buy

I know they're all pretty healthy but I'm not sure whether to go for the one lowest in cals, highest in fibre and protein (all bran) and even though the carbs are low, the amount of sugars in it seem pretty high compared to the others. Any ideas or suggestions what people would go for? I tend to mix my cereal as it makes it more balanced and interesting too :)

| if you are in the US, you learn the word as fiber. If you are in the UK, you learn the word as fibre. pinklady, you don't state your location but I'm guessing you're in the US.
