I am having a very hard time with this and hopefully somebody will be able to help me out. I have started a new diet and I am trying to be as accurate as I can with my caloric intake. I am, however, having a lot of trouble measuring fruit and vegetables. This is becuase everything that I have found measures vegetables and fruit in terms of cups, (ex. 3/4 cup blueberries, 1/2 cup broccoli). Does this mean that I am supposed to get my measuring cup out and cram my food into it? This does not seem like a very accurate way of measuring at all. It seems to me that a more accurate way of measuring would be to go by the weight. But I can't find anything out there that measures fruit in terms of weight, untill this site, that is. But I am not sure how accurate the information on the "Food Calories and Nutrition Calculator" really is.
So if anybody could help me out I would appreciate it, either by telling me how accurate this information is, where it came from etc..., or by helping me find a better way to measure my fruits and veggies then cramming them into a cup.
Thank you in advance.

Well, no one can direct you to another site from here as it is against forum policy (although there are lots of sites out there that list fruits and veggies by weight or by size, like the diameter of an apple). However, I'm sure Peter can attest that the information on CPH's Food Calories and Nutrition Calculator is very reliable , so no need to look any further

I'm not trying to break any forum rules. And yes, I have seen the places where they talk about a deck of cards, and the size of your fist and so on. I shall have to keep looking for the other information. I'm glad to hear that the info on this site is considered realible. If I'm not sounding too pushy, nosey, (insert adjective) I would like to know how you are sure it is accurate information. Especially concerning the serving sizes of fruits and vegetables. Did someone go through and do all the measurements, or is this information available from some "official" source?
Thanks for quick reply jillybean, it has eased my mind.

I think that the information on this website for fruits and vegetables comes from the USDA (united states department of agriculture) database. [incidentally you can find those figures being used by most other websites].
I never use 'cups' (they are not a common measure in the UK anyway). Today so far (on the fruit/veg front) I've had a 378g serving of pears, a 298g serving of pears, a 31g serving of banana and a 182g serving of bananas. I'd be lost without my scales and ability to figure the calories of the serving of my choice. If I had to go by rough measures like cups, I would probably round things up to be 'on the safe side' and end up with a lot less variety in my diet - or the loss of calories due to admin problems.

jillybean720,
THIS site gives the dia of an apple for the different sizes! Also you can easily share about other websites by PMing (e-mailing) other forum members. You just can't post website addresses in the forum. When people start doing that, there's no end to it and I don't have time nor want Nir to spend all his time policing it. I hope everyone is understanding... this website is my hobby. There's no company or staff behind it.
Rex,
I have the only website on the web (that I know of) that has gone to great lengths not only to state all my sources, but I even exlpain how my calculators work and give the formulas I use. (And in the years since I started I don't know how many websites have used that information to do the same thing!)
When you pull up a calculator it says in red, Click on Help for instructions and information on the calculators. You'll find my sources listed there.
As Nir says, I use the USDA database for items that don't come with labels like fruits and veggies. You can follow my link and check out the USDA site yourself. Also as Nir says, most sites use this same database.
I use it a little differently, however. I don't want my users to search for apple and get 174 choices! So I have my users select the fruit list, then they simply get small, medium and large, and a few other choices. I don't use the entire database... but you can anytime.
Lastly, in every list I have a link to report missing items. Most of the development of this website has been based on suggestions from my users.
Hope that helps,
Peter

Yes Peter, this was incrediblly helpful. YOUR site is the best site that I have foudn and I have spent many many hours searching the net. Nothing has been as comprehensive or as helpful as this one. That's why I wanted to make sure that the sources were accurate. Thank you for pointing out to me where you had already posted that information. I had not seen it the first time around, but I was able to find it with your help. And I greatly appreciate the lengths you have gone to to make this site so user friendly. The instructions and explinations that you give for the calculaters are top rate.
It is becuase of the choice that you give users, to add what is missing, that I asked my orignial question. But if your sources all check out, (either directly from a label, or from the USDA), and it seems to me that they do, then I am very excited to be a member of your website.
Thank you very much for the time and effort you spent on this site, and thank you for taking the time to answer my post.

Thanks for the nice comments Rex.
It's not likely that the data for green peas or rice will change often, but I update my data when the USDA database updates. However, if you eat a lot of a packaged product, you should check the label occasionally. Products can change at any time.
