i've seen these in the supermarket and had then at my uncle's dinner parties, but i'm not sure about the best/healthiest way of cooking them. he always seems to roast them with potatoes, but doesn't that involve a lot of oil?
also, is it possible to eat the skins like regular potatoes? i can't really remember, but i think in my experience the skin was really tough and i was told to leave it...
thanks x

I usually bake them in their skins. They are also good mashed. I think that I remember reading that any way that you can prepare a potato you can prepare a sweet potato.
The skins are edible, but perhaps not palatable .

haha, well i'l bear that in mind, maybe steer clear of the skins
cool, i'll probably put it in the microwave like i would a regular potato, cant hurt to experiment with it i guess, they're not that expensive.
thanks a lot for your advice

I microwave them, and eat the skin. Remember to cut into 'chips' and/or pierce with a fork first.
Remember they are heavy and 84 calories per 100g so it can be easy to overindulge. It is all relative though, you get more sweet potatos than, say, chocolate or ice-cream for your calories - but 50 calories in an apple looks bigger than 50 calories in sweet potato.

Oh sweet potatoes are my favorite! I bake them in the oven at like 350 degrees, and then when they are done I take the skins off, mash them all up and put a little bit of a brown sugar and cinnimon mix on them....its delish!

My favorite is still to slice them into "chips", lay on a baking pan sprayed with non-stick spray. Spray tops lightly with the butter flavor non-stick spray and sprinkle with seasoned salt and black pepper. Bake at 350 degrees, turning once, until tender. Yummmm! Tastes like a cheat
And I read somewhere that yams were healthier for you than sweet potatoes, but can't remember why. I think they were either more nutritious or less calories.
