Is oatmeal good for you?

So, I try to eat 1 package of plain Publix Oatmeal as often as I can (which is usually 3x per week). I'm forced to eat Hot Pockets for Breakfast, just because I have 5 minutes after I come downstairs to eat; I end up eating my Hot Pockets in the car.

Anyways, I sometimes sweeten the oatmeal with 1/2 packet of splenda and a splash of milk.

so, I was wondering what affects oatmeal has on the body? Unfortunately, summer is over, and I have another 8 months until I can get on my ideal diet.

But, when I do that, oatmeal will be the most carbs I'll be eating (besides fruit)

Any help?

Thanks
Adam

Oatmeal is a whole grain, so that is a plus, but instant oatmeal usually has sugar and such added to it (even if it says unflavored or plain--check the ingredients to be sure).

I'm sure there are better breakfast options than a Hot Pocket.  Heck, even just a breakfast shake/smoothie on the go could be healthier (I am a fan of the chocolate Carnation breakfast shakes--the no sugar added ones).  I even like to have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for breakfast at times--2 slices whole-grain bread (mine has 50 calories per slice), 1T natural peanut butter, and up to 1T no-sugar-added fruit preserves for a total of about 200 calories for satifying sandwich, which I can even make the night before and store in the fridge.

I'm sure some others might have some helpful suggestions, too

I've already checked, no sugar in the Oatmeal.

I know, Hot Pockets really arent good for you, amd I probably need some more suggestions...but I dont think I want just a shake.

And I'm mildly hypoglycemic, so Sugar makes me tired, meaning absolutely no sugar for breakfast.

Had to look up Hot Pockets on Google as I don't think we get them over here. Apparently there's a 'lean' version. Just as well as they don't look healthy.

Oatmeal is a whole-grain (as noted above). It has the kind of fibre that can lower cholesterol. So it is healthy.

If I was in your predicament, I'd get an air-popper and pop a bunch of popcorn the night before, put it in a bag and then eat in in the morning. (popcorn is my favourite whole-grain)

If you're serious in your aim, you'll get downstairs early enough to eat a proper breakfast.

Conversely, if you're not, you won't...

You can always make excuses to yourself, but ultimately, who are you kidding?

As far as I can tell, even Lean Pockets (the "healthier" version) have sugar in them (listed in the ingredients under "spices" and even higher on the list as "dextrose."

So let's see...you've gotten shakes, popcorn, and peanut butter and jelly sandwich suggestions.  You say no shakes, and it should be portable since you're not willing to get up any earlier, so let's think...

I still think the PBJ sandwich is a good idea, but that's just me.  If you need something hot, then how about a toasted whole-wheat English muffin with natural peanut butter?  You could also make your own healthier "hot pockets" as well--cook up some eggs (which you can do in the microwave) and roll them up in a whole-grain tortilla with some reduced-fat cheese and maybe some nice lean deli ham.  You can fold/roll them up ahead of time and store in the fridge (maybe even add some veggies--onions, peppers, etc.), then pop in the microwave in the morning to eat on the go.

Let's see, what else do I eat for breakfast on the run...whole-wheat bagel with low-fat or fat-free cream cheese or no-sugar-added fruit spread, toasted ham and cheese sandwich on whole-grain bread, some hot creamy soup (I LOVE tomato soup) in a mug with a lid (so I can drink it like coffee)...

I'm not sure wht you do for a living, but in a real time crunch, I also sometimes just pack a breakfast and eat at my desk at work.  Then I can have pretty much anything since we have a toaster, refrigerator, and microwave available.  Not sure if you work in an office environment or not, but it's just another suggestion.

Oh, and of course, you don't HAVE to eat "breakfast" foods for breakfast.  I've spent many a morning eating leftovers from the previous evening's dinner, ham and cheese sandwiches, frozen fish fillets, spaghetti squash (actually, it's about 8:20am here, and I am about to go heat up my spaghetti squash with tomato sauce and Italian turkey sausage right now since I last ate at about 5am and am trying to eat about every 3 hours or so).

Good luck finding something that works for you!

That makes sense--I just didn't know he was 15, as that wasn't mentioned in his original post.

Thanks to everyone, especially jillybean, for their help. I like both the Egg-Tortilla Homemade Hot Pocket idea, and the Whole Grain English Muffins. Next time we go grocery shopping, I'll definitely buy that!

Thanks again
