I try not to use canned foods often, but really enjoy the convenience of canned beans.  I drain and rinse them before using.  Does this significantly reduce calories or (my particular concern) sodium?

There's no chance that rinsing beans would reduce calories, but doing so may well reduce sodium. You don't specify what type of beans you're using--green, wax, pinto, black? I always buy canned pinto, black, kidney, garbanzo, etc. beans that contain no added salt. Surprisingly, some of the pricier organic ("natural") brands are the worst offenders when it comes to adding salt, while some of the more mundane supermarket regulars are now available salt free.

I often look in the canned beans and lentils section.. i use a lot of beans and lentils but my beef with them is that u have to soak them etc etc.. and its not always a convenient method of putting a meal together.  I wondered about wether they are just as healthy for you as the ones u soak.   I will have to keep my eye out for the no salt ones, and read the labels i guess, to find the best substitute in the canned variety.  Do u think they are worth changing to?  or do u think that the canned beans etc are not as nutitious ??

Lori,

Fresh from your garden is the best, but fresh from the supermarket might not be. Amazingly, frozen veggies are usually frozen when they are at their best so they can be better than "fresh" from the market!

I guess canned would be lower on the list, but I eat canned beans all the time.

i eat baked beans in the tomato sauce kinda style.  I guess they are in the same catagory as canned beans in a sense.. i do eat a lot of frozen veggies because i live in quite a remote area and our fruit and veg sometimes looks very second hand  .. ewww .. i think as far as convenience goes, the beans and lentils in the cans for me would be the difference between eating them and not because i simply dont have the time to prepare and cook them in the packet style state.

Thanks Peter, i think i will give the good ole can beans a go!  cant hurt :)

I use both (in salted and unsalted water, that is).

I rinse them all, whatever it says on the tin.

Seems a bit of a waste to lose that veg stock, but at least my conscience is clear...
