It's funny, people have been asking me a lot lately what is my favorite food? And for a long time, I haven't had an answer. When I was little, I loved my mom's enchiladas. And pie has generally been my favorite dessert. But I just don't know anymore. You'd think that that would help me to avoid food--but I can't figure out what will end my cravings anymore. I used to get a craving, eat whatever it was, and then I was done--but now, I can't seem to figure it out. If I get going, I just keep trying things and saying, "that's not right, that's not right, what is it that I want??" (Of course things are good, but not excellant, and not really right) I don't ever feel I'm truly hungry--it's like I want to eat to stop myself from getting hungry and eating something bad.

So, what do you all think about favorite foods? Do you have them, and what are they?

I'm sorry if this spurs cravings for you all :) Hopefully lots of you will reply with, "I LOVE broccoli!!" Or "I CANNOT LIVE without wheat germ!" And then you can go eat your hearts desire--though, wheat germ, I think is pretty high cal :)

Mine's Indian curry - but I save it for one of my 'lapse' days every week.   Best of both worlds - a good blowout and no fat gain!

Gee, that took some thinking -- but your mentioning pie took me straight to my favorite thing -- crust.  Piecrust.  When it's good, there's nothing better, and the best is made with lard, as in pig fat.  Yep, lard, white flour and maybe a little sugar and/or some apple cider vinegar, and of course salt.  When I was a kid Mom used to make piecrust with cinnamon sugar sprinkled over it for us.

Oh -- and corn, in any shape or form, with lots of butter.  Butter is the Staff of Life.  Oh -- well, not anymore....

And fresh cherries --- oooooh, I can't wait until June...

and

Peppers (all kinds, the hotter the better)

all hot & spicy foods

Pizza (hmm, don't have that very often any more)

granola

bananas

as a kid, spaghetti was my fav food!  Still to this day a good pasta dish is hard to beat!!!  Manicotti is alway great!!

Oh, and I do love brocolli!  eat at least 1 serving a day.  sometimes three!

Wheat germ sprinkled over broccoli.

Ah, no.

Warm chocolate chip cookies and milk!

Peter:monkey:

P.S.

When I used to go to OA meetings most of them wouldn't allow you to talk about food this way. It could get someone that was having a difficult time staying away from such foods into trouble.

I never saw it that way. If you couldn't hear about such foods in an OA meeting, how could you make it outside the meeting?

Anyway, anyone that would be bothered by reading this... shouldn't be reading this! ;)

I think I could eat an entire angel food cake.  It's mostly air, right?!
Luckily we don't make them very often at my current job.

As far as cravings, the only thing I can think of is COFFEE!  Does this count as a food craving?  I honestly think I love the taste (black for me please!), although it could be an association with the caffeine effects.  I only have a cup a day usually... but I find myself hopping out of bed ungodly early on my days off just to brew a pot for myself.  Sad!

Going back to your original post HappySlimCow, it seems like maybe it's not even about a food craving for you?  Almost sounds like it's something else itching at you, since you can't seem to find the food to 'scratch the itch'.  Just a thought.  ;)

Smart thought, Trimblebe.  Maybe looking for the perfect food just like we all look for the perfect partner, the perfect job, the perfect life.  It's rare that I eat something and am completely satisfied with the flavor, texture and satiety-in-the-stomach feeling.  But then, it's also rare that anything in life is perfect, if that's my criteria for satisfaction!

I used to have the same thing with coffee -- the thought of having it in the morning was what made me spring out of bed at 4am, just so i could enjoy a pot alone!  I was in love with the smell, the ritual, the taste, and became a purist -- only the best beans, freshly ground each morning, only double-filtered water, only in my special mug...

Sad?   Why?   If that's going to be your only vice, you'll have no problems getting into world championship condition...

My latest thing has been Dannon Light 'n Fit lemon yogurt with a crushed graham cracker in it.  It seems to mimic the taste of having a lemon meringue pie.  If one wanted, they could add whipped cream, but then it wouldn't be guiltless.

yeah, maybe we should concentrate on our favorite positive foods right now:

I heat up some plain frozen fruit, like peaches or blueberries or cherries, in the microwave until they're bubbly, like they'd be in a cobbler only without all the sugar and fat, and then sprinkle 1/2 cup of rolled oats over it -- that's breakfast, along with my protein powder, and it makes me very happy!!!!

And if I allow it to be, the crunch of organic romaine hearts is fantastic with fat free refried beans and salsa and green chile -- a fibrous, filling, flavorful healthy "taco salad." and honestly, once I've eaten that, I don't miss the Fritos.

And I love my airpopped popcorn (thank you so much, Peter) with some melted fake butter and parmesan.  But does anybody know of a fake butter that doesn't make the popcorn soggy?  I'd love to know.

And homegrown beets.   Ooooooooooh, I can't wait until springtime to watch those babies grow, and always have vivid hot pink stains on my cutting board!

Fake butter? Try Earth Balance Natural Spread. It's non-hydrogenated and non-gmo... combination of pressed oils. Tastes great on anything we've tried including popcorn.

You can find it at Trader Joe's, Wild Oats, Whole Foods and many other natural food markets.

Enjoy!

My popcorn doesn't get soggy!

I air pop it into a brown paper grocery bag; pour in the melted "butter" (currently Promise Light); then immediately close the top of the bag and shake it all around.

Most of the "butter" ends up being soaked up by the bag, and the popcorn gets a very light coating. Just enough!

Peter:monkey:

P.S.

Yes, I add salt, too. And no, I don't eat the bag!

great suggestions -- I'll have to go to trader Joe's -- never been there, and it's an hour and 15 minutes away -- farther away than Super Wally World, which is 45 minutes -- but then, "nothing worthwhile is ever easy or cheap!"

I'll also experiment with the paper bag trick.  You were right about the airpopper, peter; why should I doubt you on this one?

You could try Butter buds?? Or Molly Mcbutter? It's like powdered something that tastes like butter (it might not stick fabulously). Also, if you're just wanting flavor--maybe Mrs. Dash?? (I hadn't tried Mrs. Dash until this week--and I love it--I'm a salt freak, and since I'm not allowed to add salt to things anymore, I'm so glad that it's good.)

So, lots of you have favorite foods that aren't really bad :) Well, maybe 1/2 of you :)

I don't just have one favourite thing that is bad - I think I like (almost) all bad things! Also, I just love the process of eating. As far as cravings go, chocolate is the only one that I can think of off-hand.

Oh cheese, I love cheese, chedder, gouda, brie, stilton, gorganzola, cream, lira, the only cheese I've tried that I don't care for is that old diet standy, lo fat cottage.

Fortunately after cheeses I like peaches, necterines, all melons, all citrus. apples, pears, kiwi, banana... I think you get the drift.

Of course beef, pork, lamb, rabbit, venison is pretty tasty too, and fish but chicken really rocks. (and oh gosh duck skin! and goose!)

Chocolate is very tasty...

oh heck, I just like food, including broccoli.

(though I CAN live without wheat germ:))

Bread wins hands down for me.   I love it toasted, not toasted, made into garlic bread, buns....and any kind.   I especially like the ones that are whole grain, with bits of the seeds in them.   And with real butter!   Another favorite is a sliced apple, topped with vanilla yogurt and pecans sprinkled on top.   And my homemade Weight Watchers recipe for lasagne.

Broccoli with garlic powder on top with some cheese.

Egg starter scarmbled eggs with sugarfree maple syrup.

Oatmeal with splenda and cinnomon. Oh god it's so good.

Now my favorite foods that'll make even the heartiest americans shiver with delight.....

Cake icing. I wont touch the cake, but I'll scrape off all the icing when you arent looking.

Dollar cheeseburgers courtesy of McDonalds.

Poptarts. Jeez...I havent had one in sooo long. Good thing too, they are freakin horrible for you.

Pancakes. Pancakes. Pancakes.

Vegetable pie and baked beans...

It's the puff pastry that does the damage, but it's a delicious meal.   Lots of different tastes and textures.

Still have it occasionally, but not twice a week like before!

Neither did I. The comment caused me to remember that my mum sometimes makes cheesecake from cottage cheese [because although Quark would be more suitable, at 23p for 200g at ASDA/NETTO, cottage it is the cheapest soft cheese she can source in the UK].

I first melted some cottage cheese in the microwave, but it wasn't great.

I then baked some cheesecake (experimenting with recipe modifications as I went along; also creating a make-shift measuring jug...) and this came out a little better.

It's too difficult to choose just one food so here is the list:

Harry & David's dark chocolate truffle    cheesecake

petite sirah wine                                     pinot noir

a shot of Oban Scotch                           champagne

raspberries, blueberries, cherries             apricots, avocados, tangerines, pineapple

pecans                                                   fresh artichokes, asparagus, corn on the cob

rack of lamb with mint                            cornish game hen with wild rice dressing

homemade cranberry sauce                    war wonton soup

spicy tangerine chicken                          barbequed teriyaki salmon

lobster                                                   clam chowder

espresso                                                 oolong tea

I haven't given up anything that I really love.  I just keep counting the calories and stay within the calorie range.  Sometimes I have to plan in advance to fit in the calories for a celebration - eat a bit less before that meal, knowing when to stop, and exercise more that day to balance it out.  Most of the time it is portion control and just staying conscious of what I am doing.
