Greetings,

Are any of you aware that Dr. Fuhrman has a new set of two books out called "Eat For Health?"  The first book is theory, and the second book is a workbook and cook book.  It is basically the same as Eat To Live, but incorporates new resarch, and a more gradual approach to implementing a program of nutritional excellence.

I recently ordered Eat for Health, and just received it.  I have not read the books in their entirety, but from what I have gleaned thus far, I would highly recommend them for anyone seeking to improve their health.  That's right....HEALTH.  Yes, weight loss will probably occur, but that is just a side benefit to improving your health and longevity.  And no,  Dr. Furhman is NOT paying me to write this :)

To your health...............Mike

Uh, I think he wrote that himself!

Has anyone read these books and followed them?  I've read Eat to Live a couple times and have followed it in the past and lost weight.  Is Eat for Health really any different or better?

I've read Eat2Live twice; I'm only up to page 75 of volume one of Eat For Health. Much of it is the same.

Key differences:

1) concept of "exercises with food(TM)" (for example the first exercise is, without making any other changes in one's diet, eat 200g fruit and 200g veg a short while before one's regular meal)

2) concept of diet phases: exact opposite of the Atkins or South Beach concept, phase 4 is the most demanding (where 90% of calories come from healthy plant food)

3) ANDI/MANDI scores concept. Eat2Live used 'nutrient density scores' between 0 and 100 and gave scores to food groups. Here individual foods are separated and scores are given between 0 and 1000.

I'm glad I've got it, because it is more fun to read a new book than re-reading ETL a 3rd time, but to be honest if you already know and follow ETL it won't make a big difference, as the principle difference is for "new converts"

Hope this helps, and I'm looking forward to reading anyone else's reviews

Thanks for the info, NIR.  I ordered the books yesterday and should have them tomorrow (amazon prime shipping)  I mostly got them because of that ANDI/MANDI system thing.  Does it pretty much cover any type of food that you would normally eat?

That link leads to a bunch of pop-up windows and eventually freezes Firefox.

I'm using IE. I just right-click on the link and select Save Target As. (I've just double-checked that the link works that way.)

I got the books a day after my last post and I've been following somewhere around phase 3.  (I didn't read very much of it yet, but I've had Eat to Live for years)

I've lost 6 pounds already, so I'm happy with the plan.

Wanted to say thanks for all your discussion on this topic (agendas included).

I saw this today and ordered the books. I am currently doing fat loss for idiots and usually write on that board.

I am interested in this "diet" as a way to eat in the future. I tried FL4I to get some extra baby weight off, but I was concerned from the start about the lack of whole grains and non-veggie and fruit days. While not vegetarian, I would fare better than most if all the meat were wiped off the planet. I do have to agree about the protein intake -- I don't want to lose muscle as a result of being thinner. So I don't want to cut it out completely.

I always have goods intentions, to eat well -- but I always lose track after a while, as I am sure most do. How do you incorporate this into your lives? I mean, when you go to parties, they are going to have all the bad stuff. And I know you can have a treat once in a while, but when its summer and there is a BBQ every weekend... There is always an excuse for "bad" eating.

I would agree that I couldn't fill my protein requirment with veggies (minus beans), but I do think a moderate amount of whole grains (no white bread!), lots of veggies and a moderate amount of animal protein should do it. The problem is, knowing when to eat them together! This FL4I does work, and I am MUCH less bloated than when I was on the cracker train :yum: (I love cheez-its!). But I will not cut grains out forever, my gut will not tolerate it!

And my weakness is cheese! I love every kind!

I seem to be stuck between the two diets. Maybe a nice compromise is warranted. Any advice would help!

This collection of blog posts:

http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/cat-eating-to-live-on-the-outside.html

explains what to order when you're doing 'Eat To Live' at a wide range of restaurants, so hopefully it will answer your questions (that is, until you get to your Library or book shop to read the book)

I used to think that (as somebody who does 4 hours of weight training per week) I need a lot of protein. In fact, I thought I needed 100g of protein per day. Since then I have changed my mind - I am now only eating 60g of protein per day, which is easy to get from green vegetables and beans. I haven't given up meat completely (I had 40g of turkey slices - that's about an ounce and a half if you don't do grams) a couple of days ago, as an example. The point is, my diet is not animal-centered, it is vegetable-and-fruit centered. But even whilst I was taking my time to accept that I didn't need so much protein, it helped me when another ETL follower said to me: do what you can. If you're not willing to let go of the meat, eat it but do the other things (vastly increase the amount of produce you're eating etc.). Hope that helps during your transition

Thank you, I ordered the book online. I personally would rather have more veggies and beans. Not a big fan of meat anyway. But I want to be strong. Not mega- woman, but a chicken breast per day would do me just fine!

Thanks for the help.

I  can't view the blog. There is large font over the blogging, which looks like the side menu (topics: ADHD, ACNE..etc)

Kind of weird.

Just tried it and it works for me; the only things I can think of are

1) try to adjust the text size  on your browser to Medium

2) try using Internet Explorer if you're using something else

Well, the large font are links and I can only click on them. The actual blog "underneath" is almost like wallpaper, I cannot actively use it (actively click on any links)

Is this a membership site? If so, that may be why.

see attached - the adhd and acne, etc are actual links...

Thanks anyway.

I'm using Firefox and it works fine with that browser.  http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

When I go to a party or something I just eat the healthiest things I can find there and if there isn't much healthy food I just eat whatever is served and concentrate on not going overboard.  The next morning I'm right back to eating healthy.

The nice thing about eating this way is that I don't have all the cravings that I did before.

I'm only a couple chapters into Eat for Health and I've lost 9 pounds already in just a little over 2 weeks with almost no cravings.  I like that it isn't as rigid as Eat to Live, but still the same principles.

I read eat for health and skipped around eat to live this weekend. I do see the difference in strictness.

WOW! I love it. The more I read, the more it made sense to me. And I generally am not a big meat eater. I love veggies and the recipes sounded so delicious. This may be because I am currently on Fat Loss For Idiots, which is a lot of meat. And I am getting tired of it! I have lost 11 lbs in 7 weeks, which is good. I am close to my ideal weight, so I realize it will not come off as quickly. But my digestive system is NOT happy with me and my lack of fiber! I am not sure what I was thinking, going from mostly veggie eating to mostly meat eating. I wasn't losing my baby weight on my "diet". I guess I didn't want to admit I needed to cut out the extra #%@&!, like crackers for one. I am not sure why I was able to cut out the crackers and chips on FL4I and not on my regular diet, but .... Maybe it is the promise of 3 "cheat days" after every 11 days of diet. I have found this only screws up my digestion even more.

I want to do this program more for health reasons than weight loss, although I am sure it will come as a nice side affect. I am tired of being tired all the time. I want this for my family and to teach my daughter how to eat right.

I am healthy, but I think that this is the life plan for me. I proably will not become a vegan, and I LOVE cheese, but I know this is the right thing to do. I have known for a while that processed food is terrible and have been a label reader on the prowl for high fructose corn syrup and real whole wheat for a long time now.

I am going to finish up the summer and our meat store. We have so many BBQs and parties... I know we will always have parties, but I would like to start phase 1 on a good note, with no temptations.

Then I can just eat a little at parties and "get healthy" the next day.

Thanks for the advice!

Oh, and NICE WORK on the weight loss!
