Here's my story,

I was born to a poor family in an old log cabin in Mississippi...

Wait, that's not right. I've never been to Mississippi!

Okay, I grew up thinner than a flagpole and could eat anything I wanted. Ahh, those were the days. Yes, I used to be "one of those". Because my parents didn't have a lot of money we didn't have a lot of luxuries that made us want to stay inside. See! I was poor!

After I became an adult most of my jobs dealt with staying on my feet all the time. The low pay of my job helped me stay thin since I couldn't afford to eat a lot. When I got married and found a career in front of a computer is when things went to #%@&!. Wife made some good money and my new career change helped us afford to eat out. A lot. Plus I could eat while I worked. My weight increased dramatically. After a while even mowing the lawn became a real chore and I had to take frequent breaks.

I went from being 155 dripping wet to 265 on a good day. Part of my problem was I couldn't stand eating a packed lunch so I'd eat out every day. I ate pretty fast too. Growing up my parents used to have a contest on who would clean off their plate first and I usually won. I also consumed at least 2 litres of Coke or Dr. Pepper per day, usually more.

I've done quite a bit of cutting back within the past year. I rarely drink anything carbonated. I have a mug I carry around with me and fill it with ice water every chance I get. The only "non-water" I consume regularly is my single cup of coffee in the morning, with sugar-free french vanilla cream and Splenda. I can't drink Coke or Dr. Pepper anymore, they are too sweet for me now.

Last time I weighed myself I was at 260. My BMI is 34.3.  BMR is 2,306, RMR is 2,116. Not sure what those numbers mean or what I'm supposed to be doing with them.

My wife has gained quite a bit as well. I asked my wife her height and weight to calculate her BMI and she said "Are you insane? In some places asking that is grounds for divorce!" I finally coaxed it out of her and calculated her BMI at 36.9. I'll keep her other info private, if she wants to provide it she can join and post. Anyway, the reason why I mentioned her is because I'm having a hard time eating right around her. She has expressed the desire to lose weight, but that's as far as it goes.

At one time my doctor told me I was borderline diabetic. She said she couldn't label me as diabetic, just glucose-intolerant. I was told to stay away from white breads and potatoes. I bought some whole-grain bread and started packing my lunch. The bread taste like cardboard to me but with enough sliced processed chicken I can barely tolerate it. My goal is to get used to eating better foods the same way I quit drinking soda and started drinking water; stick with it until you like it. My problem is I'd eat something I thought was healthy, but come to find out it wasn't as healthy as I thought.

Okay, I'm done rambling on.

EDIT: Oops, my stats. 6 foot 1, 260 pounds, 41 years old, blue eyes and enjoys walks along the beach.

Hi Codemonkey!   Welcome to the forums

With that intro, I think I'd consider having Peter move it to the diary section, and start a diary.   It really does help to record our thoughts and also food and nutrition values, if you'd like.

Have you read the tutorials, too?   So you know what "eating well and exercising" is all about?   Also, the newsletters are very informative    I love the support I've gotten here, but I think most of that comes in the diary section.

Had to chuckle at the comment about the wheat bread............sounded like my hubs!   But I found a 100% whole wheat bread that he likes...........just buy a different loaf each time you are at the grocery store, until you find one you like.   Make sure it says 100% whole grain on the package...........otherwise it has white flour in it

You can also check the foods you are eating on this site's food and nutrition calculators.   It is indeed surprising how much fat lurks in the foods we eat    But, it's good to check it out, and know what you are feeding your body.

Good luck on your journey to a healthier you!

With a sense of humor like that - I sure hope you consider keeping a diary here!  Too funny!

Last time I weighed myself I was at 260. My BMI is 34.3.  BMR is 2,306, RMR is 2,116. Not sure what those numbers mean or what I'm supposed to be doing with them.I'm not particularly good with numbers, but your unadjusted RMR is simply the number of calories your body burns doing absolutely nothing...living, breathing, digesting, etc.  It's usually not a good idea to consume less calories than that per day.

My wife has gained quite a bit as well. I asked my wife her height and weight to calculate her BMI and she said "Are you insane? In some places asking that is grounds for divorce!" I totally agree with your wife on that!!!:wink:  My hubs asked me last night how much I weigh and I still won't tell him.  I've went from 211 lbs to 136.5 and I'm still self-conscious!  Of course, if he was more devious...he'd think of finding this site and reading my diary...Shhhhhh...don't tell him!

Anyway, welcome to :cph:!!!  Glad you joined us!!  There is lots of wonderful support here...fantastic members...bunches of help & advice if you want it!!

Good luck!

Hisgal,
Yeah, if my wife ever found out I posted what I did here I'll be sleeping on the couch for a month. Good thing the couch is pretty comfortable.

I do plan on creating a diary. I guess he could move this over. I'll leave that up to him. If he doesn't move it I'll just make one.

I did scan through the tutorials. I always thought I ate well. As a matter of fact I ate REAL well. Some of the stuff in the tutorials were a little confusing, probably because I'd read it in between doing other stuff. I'll definately experiment with other whole grain breads, but unfortunately I don't recall the brand I have now. I took all the bread out and I zip-lock two at a time so when I go to work I just grab the packages and go. I am getting somewhat used to it though, I've learned to eat the crust first and get that out of the way. Then the rest of the sandwich isn't so bad.

I did attend Weight Watchers last year. I didn't care for it, but I did like the tools to help me lose weight. I liked being able to see the info next to the menu item.
Scoobees:
So what should I set my calorie intake to be? I don't know how much I'm burning now. I'd guess not a lot since I spend the majority of my time sitting down. My fingers do most of my workout. I need to come up with some kind of goal. I don't want it to be unrealistic, for example looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Yes, I know it's realistic, but that's more work than I'd care to do!

"Shhhhhh...don't tell him!" Hmm, I see financial gain in keeping my mouth shut!
Now, I did buy one of those pedometers last Thursday. On Friday I walked 11,000 steps. Skipped Saturday and Sunday, walked 7,000 steps on Monday and 10,000 yesterday. Today for lunch I walked with co-workers and so far I've walked 9,503 steps since this morning. My goal is to increase the number of steps I take every day.

The pedometer does talk. I wonder if it would say "You've walked 15,000 steps. You're about to have a coronary". I thought for sure I was going to pass out when I got back to my desk. It's too hot outside!

We have a scale here at work so I thought I'd check my weight. Either it's not calibrated right or I really do weigh 262. Man, I quit drinking soda two months ago! I'm really bummed.

I don't think I've ever found anything that can replaces keeping a food diary!

That could be in the form of recording it here at :cph: in your diary, like many others do.   Or it could be a small notebook that you carry everywhere with you, and record every bite that goes in your mouth.    Every bite, no cheating!  Haha    I have done both, and at the same time.    I always had the notebook with me, so I couldn't "forget" eating something.......then each night or first thing next morning, I'd record it here in my diary.   It's really nice to be able to go back and look at it now, and it makes it easier to evaluate what I've done.

Right now, soontobeme, is doing just that, to get going on her weight loss again.   For one week, she has committed to recording everything she eats............she's not recording the calories or nutritional values in her diary right now (as I remember), but she's decided that she needs to see what she really does consume in a week.

To take that one step farther, you could then figure out the calories you've eaten each day.............and one step farther, break it down into how much protein, fat, and carbs you've eaten.    I used to also record the fiber intake..........that usually showed me how much of what I ate was whole foods (fruits, veggies and whole grains)and how much processed.

I have a diary in the diary section on this site.   Feel free to read it    You will see all my struggles in this weight loss battle, and why I started, and why I can't give up even though I haven't reached my goal yet.

BTW, this is the first time in our marriage (of 32 years) that my hubs knows what I weigh.    I started at 247 and got as low at 155, and am now struggling to get back down there (currently 167).    I find that there is a certain amount of accountability in his knowing that.    And he is also trying to lose weight...........we are kind of competing right now, and he is ahead of me.....he's under 165 right now.    He thinks he's so smart, that he is now lower than me!

Welcome. (I moved the topic over to the diary section.)

RMR is 2,116. Not sure what those numbers mean or what I'm supposed to be doing with them.

The advice about recording what you eat in a diary, and somehow counting your calories, is one I would go with. I would initially aim to eat your unadjusted RMR every day (2116) and monitor results. If you don't lose satisfactorily then consider dropping a little [no less than 1587 without a doctor's supervision, though!]

my doctor told me I was borderline diabetic. She said she couldn't label me as diabetic, just glucose-intolerant. I was told to stay away from white breads and potatoes.

You would probably do even better if you learnt to skip bread (and other grain products) and mostly focus on legumes, fruits and vegetables - better for your diabetes, better for fat loss and better for general health. [Yes, I just picked  up a tiny sample of bread whilst cruising the supermarkets, but that's probably the only grain product I'll be having today.]

Heh, I guess I shouldn't have stole your monkey.

Okay, one of my hobbies is my Jeep CJ5 and going offroading. I also post in an offroad forum and my avatar was my Jeep parked on the street in front of my house. This was before I knew their rule about avatars needed to be off-road avatars and because it was a picture of my Jeep on the road, it was not acceptable. They even went so far as to modify my avatar with spinner rims and lowering it as a joke.

So, I went through the videos I have of my Jeep and found the muddiest one I could find. If you look closely those are my headlights in the picture. I splashed through the muddiest hole I could find in that picture. The video is on YouTube if anyone is interested in seeing it.

Not sure how to attach the link to YouTube. The URL is here: youtube.com/watch?v=rVrl0ZEz8sE

Y'know, that does look like chocolate!

Well, I guess now is as good as time to keep track of what I'm consuming (I was cheating last week so I didn't begin my log):

Breakfast:
61.8 - Coffee w/Splenda & sugarfree french vanilla creamer (1 cup)
160 - Maple & Brown Sugar Instant Oatmeal w/Splenda
Lunch:
335 - Subway 6 inch Turkey Breast on wheat with American cheese and mustard (ice water to drink)
35 - Subway apple slices.
Dinner:

520 - Premium Grilled Chicken Ranch BLT Sandwich
430 - Bacon Ranch Salad with Grilled Chicken w/Ranch

Weight taken at 2:45 PM: 260 lbs.

I realized I wasn't eating enough during the day so I went out and got me a salad, bringing my total calorie intake to 1543. Still too low. I'm going to work on evening it out in the future.

Ah! Now I see the headlights! We should have had a "Guess the Avatar" contest.

Good luck with your weight loss. We have that in common, but not driving in mud!

Thank you very much! I'll be here until Thursday!

I have to say, if it wasn't for these underground tunnels downtown there's no way I'd be walking in this heat. Walking the two blocks just to get to the tunnels is tough enough! I've been to New Orleans a couple years ago and about died from the heat and humidity. I don't know how you do it! Is it as humid there as it is in New Orleans?

I bought me a pedometer but forgot to bring it to work with me.

I think keeping a diary is helping. It motivates me to watch what I eat more, even though I've only been doing it for uhh.... 4 hours? Yeah, I'm a pro.

My bad habit is still scarfing my food down. I had them cut my sandwich in half so I could eat half now and half later. I caught myself shoveling the first half down.

And we are watching you! So far your diary has been viewed over 200 times. And you can't hide in tunnels or behind muddy windshields.

At home:
420 - Premium Grilled Chicken Classic Sandwich (Walked almost 1 mile to McDonalds to get it. I was pretty sore when I arrived home)
120 - 6 Fire Roasted Tomato & Olive Oil Triscuits
104.2 - 150 oz Red and green grapes
430 - Bacon Ranch Salad with Grilled Chicken /w Ranch

You might notice I'm a creature of habit. I don't know why I do that, I just order the same thing every day. After a while the employees at Subway stopped asking me what I want, they just make what I usually order when I walk in the door. I do eat something different at dinnertime, only because the kids would freak out if I serve the same dish every day.

I'm wondering if this will hurt me trying to lose weight.

One Saturday morning about 30 years ago my wife and I and kids walked down to our little town and into the local bakery. When we walked in the baker asked me, "Your usual?"

Boy, was I caught! I was in that habit of stopping on the way to work every morning and my wife had no idea.

What I really wanted to write about was my own habit of eating the same things every day. This was years later, when I was fighting my eating disorder at its worst.

I would start the day with OJ and then after the gym homemade raisin bran cereal (bran flakes, raisins and skim milk).

I had one morning snack and lunch for Mon, Wed and Fri; another combo for Tue and Thu. Afternoon snack was always microwave popcorn.

Another plan for dinners. This is the way I lived.

Did I count calories? Well, obviously I didn't need to make daily calculations. In fact, I hadn't counted them at all until my OA sponsor expressed concern that I was getting enough fat in my diet. So I put it on an Excel spreadsheet.

A funny twist to the story is that a very long time later I created the food calculator for this website. And a couple years after that I found the printout of my old Excel spreadsheet. I had forgotten I had ever done that, and yet it almost exactly matched the format of the calculator!

When we get more comfortable with out eating we can branch out a little more. Baby steps.

Thanks DG and Peter. Heh, I was starting to wonder if people read my diary (part of me was hoping nobody was, LOL!)

I feel a little better. My gout attack is gone so I can walk again although I think my walk to McDonalds triggered it. For those who haven't dealt with the pain of gout, it can get really bad. During one attack I had to go to the hospital because I couldn't sleep all night. The slightest touch would be extremely painful. Even sitting still was killing me, and taking perscribed medication that would usually knock me out didn't work. If I knew hacking my foot off would take care of it, I would have done it. It hurt that bad.

I totally blew my diet over the weekend. At work it's easy to stick with it because I have co-workers who are doing the same thing, but on the weekends I have a friend who's a bad influence. He was going through a rough time and when I got to his house he ordered a pan pizza and I admit, I had more than I should have. Plus my kids balk at having to eat veggies for lunch.

I also need to stick to recording what I ate. I'm thinking about creating a webpage to allow me to enter on the fly what I've eaten for the day and keep track of it. Also allow me to enter any excercise I've done. I have a pedometer and I'd like to record how many steps I've done for the day. Using my website, I can record on the fly from anywhere (rather than an Excel spreadsheet). I do love the tools on this website, thank you Peter for doing all this work! I have sent the link to some of my friends and family who expressed the desire to lose weight.

I'm both too embarassed to record what I ate over the weekend and some of what I hate I can't remember, so I'm starting over. Here's what I've consumed today (I decided to break it down to time of consumption instead of "breakfast, lunch or dinner", since a lot of what I eat is spread out):

07:15 - Coffee w/Splenda & sugarfree french vanilla creamer (1 cup) - 61.8 calories
07:30 - 3 Metamucil Capsules with water - 5 calories
08:00 - Maple & Brown Sugar Instant Oatmeal w/Splenda X2 - 320 calories

12:00 - Weight: 255 lbs (I cheated, I weighed myself before lunch)

13:00 - Subway 6 inch Turkey Breast on wheat w/ American cheese & mustard  - 280 calories
16:00 - Subway 6 inch Turkey Breast on wheat w/ American cheese & mustard (my other half of my 12 inch)  - 280 calories
22:00 - Bacon Ranch Salad with Grilled Chicken /w Ranch - 430 calories

Running total: 1,376.8 calories

I am running late today and I forgot to grab more oatmeal for breakfast. I didn't even have time for my coffee or Metamucil capsules. As far as the pills, does it matter what time of day I take them? I could take them when I get home, right?

09:20 - Strawberry Poptarts - 400 calories

Thank ya! It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. getting the footlong sandwiches and eating it a piece at a time at work kept me from being hungry when I left work.

Well, today was not a good day. On the way to work I started feeling real sick. I thought I was going to pass out. Like an idiot, I kept going until I got to work. It just got worse after that, so I called my wife and told her to come pick me up. I knew that at that time I couldn't drive.

After we left my work I got real sick in the truck. She took me to the ER and found out my blood pressure was 177/120. I was in the hospital for almost 4 hours after they got my pressure back down.

I am feeling better now. Man, that was scary.

I'm taking a break on my diary for now. Every morning I have been feeling very dizzy (although not as bad as Monday morning though). I thought it was the fiber pills, seeing I wasn't taking it with enough water. I stopped taking the fiber pills but that has not changed the situation. Every morning I feel very dizzy.

Fiber without enough water causes constipation.

I've fainted once in my life and I was told that if I ever feel faint it could be because of dehydration. That drinking water would help raise my blood pressure and solve the dizzyness.

I'm not suggesting this is your problem, but drinking a lot of water is even more important when losing weight:

Thanks y'all. Apparently the fiber pills weren't the ones causing me to become dizzy. I stopped taking them yesterday but I still felt very faint. I saw my doctor and he said that the fiber pills didn't contribute to my light-headedness or my high blood pressure. He suspects the low caloric intake didn't help, but suggested that didn't cause it either.

He gave me a prescription that took care of the dizzyness and it helped almost immediately. I did cheat today, but I guess it wouldn't be considered cheating since my intake was pretty low to begin with. I stopped walking last week so my weight loss slowed down. I'm at 251 pounds now.

I'm going to start my weight loss again, but not go as extreme as I did earlier. I was hoping to break the 240 mark and was pushing too hard to do that too quickly. I will also start walking again, but only starting small and working my way up gradually.

I'll be back to updating my diary tomorrow.

Mudman,

When I was pregnant, sometimes I felt dizzy.  Could it be?    Nahhhhh....just kidding.  Glad to see you back.  Take it easy and listen to the good doc.

Yeah, I'm still here. Heh, grew tired of copying and pasting from previous days because I don't vary what I eat. Plus I didn't think anyone was reading mine. You proved me wrong, LOL! :yum:

I gained a little over the weekend, but not too much. I snacked too much I guess.

As far as the question about the Metamucil I don't think it matters what time you take them as long as you do take them. And as long as you are on a particular time schedule most of the time, making it a little later sometimes won't affect you. In my opinion anyway.

I know, I'm behind, so sue me.

Because of this thing with my dog and the utility worker, I've been ignoring my diary. I have not, however, ignored my diet.

I weighed myself today and I'm now at 248 pounds. It was so nice to set that scale to 250 and have it not move when I stepped on it.
