I have tried what seems like everything to try to loss weight and I find that I am bigger then when I started.  (my weight didn't go up and down, just up).

I was going through this site and found this statement

"Follow almost any diet plan and you will lose weight. This is because whether you are counting calories, fat, or carbohydrates, or restricting certain types of food, you are ultimately restricting the number of calories you consume. The formula for losing weight is very simple: Consume fewer calories than you burn. "

This is not true for me and I don't understand why.  I don't know what more I can do, all I know is I don't want to live fat anymore.  I feel completely trapped by my fat.  Not only is my body fat, but so is my mind and my spirit, and i more then hate it!

Please if there is someone out there who can help, I would appreciate it so very much!

I'm 28, I take in on average under 1800 calories a day. There was a time, not so long ago and for a long time that I took in well under 1200 calories a day.  I now eat when I am hungry untill I am content.  My weight is way to high.  I am now eating more then I ever have, and have stopped gaining.  I am tring to stop obsessing, but it doesn't work when it comes to my body image.  my weight bounces between 220 to 227 pounds.  Every time I get to 219 pounds my body seems to shift gears and with in 3 days I am back to about 223.  It just seems to like where it is.  I would love to be about 170 pounds, but don't think it can ever happen.

To be honest it would have also been helpful to know your height and gender.

For example, for 28 years old 220lb:

5' female: unadjusted RMR is 1649
6' male: unadjusted RMR is 2006

A bit of a difference, you'll agree.

Though clearly, 1200 calories would have been too little, regardless of who you are.

You are saying that you have found your 'maintenance' level, and it is 1800 (i.e. you neither gain nor lose on this many calories). The next question to ask is: how does this correlate with what the calculator would predict. You haven't mentioned how active you are - can you elaborate?

If you increased your calories (e.g. to 1900) would you gain or maintain? [have you tried?]

Read up and educate yourself as best as you can. Search the internet and read different people's opinions on exercise, weight loss, and eating healthy. If you really want to change your life, you can. It just takes a lot of hard work and dedication. You know what is good to eat and what is not. If you don't, research it. Everyone advertises all these diet plans, quick fix shakes, being on point with how many calories you need to eat a day, and writting everything you eat down. Some of those things work for some people, but it's really not necessary. All you have to do is two things...Exercise and eat healthy. Don't look at it like a diet. Look at it as a life style change. Exercise everyday. Start off slow, and increase it every few weeks, then every month, then every few months. Workout early in the morning then eat a healthy breakfast. Try to do some type of aerobic exercise like walking/running/swimming/jogging everyday. Then lift some weights before bed. That will keep your heart rate up and metabolism going when you sleep and when you're resting. If you really want to lose it, you will. I use to eat junk all the time. Soda, cheesesteaks, pizza, fast food and candy everyday. Then one day I said, enough. I just stopped it all right there. Haven't had one of those things in over two months. I've lost 25 pounds and am halfway to my goal of 50 pounds lost. Just put your mind to it, and you can lose weight and become healthy. Good luck.

I am a female at 5'6".  When I said 1800 calories a day was my intake, I gave a brief statement because I am sick of talking about this and tring to find the answer for what will work for me.  1800 calorie is actually a very high intake day, bit an average day.  It could be anywhere from 1200 to 1800.  I did count for a while and was arounf 1500 a day.  I haven't counted since then (that was a few weeks ago) and so I gave an extimated number, and I didn't want it to be under what I take in.  I thought being over would be better.

I know all of this sounds so strange.  However like I said I am just so sick of this.  I have worked so hard for I don't even know how long anymore.  I finally lost weight when I had a job where I was very active for 12-16 hours a day, and didn't have time to eat.  It shouldn't take this to loss weight.

After that job I did everything to keep it off.  I exercised daily and watched my intake (healthy choices); I gained.   Then before my wedding (August of '07) I went of slim fast for two months and exercising everyday, plus I have an active life style; and gained.  I thought I wasn't eating enough, so I went to a low carb, low fat, low calorie diet six small meals a day and was up to walking 4 miles a day.  I gained only a little, actaully it didn't do much either way.  So I gave up.  I didn't care.  I lived a normal life, well kinda, I still made healthy choices, and didn't gain or loss.

I read everything I could there and found nothing that I didn't already know or had't already tried.  I saw doctors who shrugged at me, they could do nothing or say nothing to help.  I then went on the Weigh Down Workshop.  With that I went to that 219 number I told you about eariler and bounced right back up with in 3 days.  I think this program would be great for an over eater, however I am not an over eater, or at least I don't think I am.  I really don't know what is wrong with me.  Thats why I am here.  I now am doing bothing special.  Healthy choices and a very active lifestyle, and well what a shock, nothing.

This is not my first try at something, but what may be my last chance at all.

Could it be that you're not recording your calories accurately?

In the end, it comes down to calories and I thought I used to count calorie too.... until I started actually MEASURING and WEIGHING my food and writing every single morsel that passed mylips down in my food journal.
You will never get an accurate picture of what's happening until you start recording everything accurately.

I would urge you to do that first. Remember, everything you eat counts. EVERYTHING! And don't estimate.. weight it.. make sure you're recording accurately.
Do this for at least a week and see what happens....

Have you checked your thyroid? I recently read an article on CNN about how some people have weight gain due to an underactive thyroid. It seems like you've made several attempts and therefore this may be a situation to check/rule out if its a thyroid issue.

One idea for you is to have your RMR checked at a facility that offers this service. Will probably cost $50 - $100 and give you a clue as to weather your body is indeed acting differently to how predicted.

And as you found that you respond to exercise/activity positively, do as much of that as you have time for.

There are times (more then once) that I have counted accurately.  I have had my thyroid tested twice.  As for the RMR I have never heard of it.  Can you tell me more about it?  I am now starting to look into hormones and seeing if that could have anything to do with it.  I have yet another appointment with a doctor in a few weeks.

I just looked it up.  But am still wondering about the test.  How does the test work, and how can you change your metabolic rate if it is low.  (metabolism is something I have looked into a lot!)

I understand an RMR breath test is usually conducted with MedGem equipment (type MedGem into Google for more info).

and also see Raise Your Metabolism and Burn More Calories
