Does anyone else have problems controlling the urge to binge only late at night, when you are drowsy and its time for bed?  I consume so many calories this way, and I am not even hungry, I'd say the average binge is about 500-700 calories.  I have no control over what I am doing, I just seem to wander into the kitchen, I'll grab a snack and then I'll go back again, and even a third time, to get more or something else.

How do you win the battle over this urge?  Any suggestions of "tricks to try"?

Instead of winning the battle I chose to embrace the urge. You've heard of the suggestion that you should stop eating at 7pm or 8pm (for example I think I encountered in when recently re-reading Eat To Live) when I see such a suggestion I just smile. Stopping eating at 7-8pm is only a reality for me if that's also my bedtime. So, accepting that this isn't happen the only logical choice for me is to leave spare calories for the final eating event.

I also have a 'tower of snacks' in the living room, to shortcut some of the trips to the kitchen. It currently boasts 21 different snack foods I'm likely to want to sample and I also have a list of other foods (popcorn, oatmeal etc.) that I work from. My obsession is that unless I've "kept in touch" with each of the foods I have in stock I am somehow deprived.

So, my solution to the problem was to not solve it, just make it fit within my existing calorie budget. What a cop out, uh? (I'm still tryng to 'solve' the problem, for instance by repeatingly listening to hypnosis audio that tells me I should only eat when I'm hungry but this is very much a long term project)

Nir, thanks for your reply.  I don't think it will work for me to take your approach, because late night eating also keeps me from sleeping properly.  I need to find some other ways of manging through my most vulnerable time frame.  Maybe something like wearing mittens after 8PM as an extra reminder for a couple of weeks would help.

molly i have this problem too, throughtout the day I am the number 1 dieter and healthy girl, and at night I just eat and eat and eat and eat some more!!! so what im trying to do is just eat something healthy when I get the urge, or a lolypop or whatever so your mouth is busy, i heard that making an infussion with lettuce curbs your appetite, but i havent tried that, i have cups of tea with milk, infusions, and aloe vera tea. try to fight the urge, or eat yogourts. If you find any tricks tell me plz, this binging at night is the story of my life =(

I solved my late night binge problem by adding a high protein shake made with milk to my afternoon, before dinner comes around. I ate less at dinner and feel more satisfied. It has eliminated the need to ravage the kitchen at night with the munchies.

Here's a tip. Eat all you want late night, but brush your teeth with minty toothpaste first. If you do that, I bet you end up not eating anything.

I have a few things I do

I chew gum (they have a lot of fruity flavors now)

or I make my own popscicles (by freezing crystal light)

diet hot chocholate - its 25 calories and takes a long time to consume so its easy to not want "more".

I also do what one of the posters mentioned above and save some calories (200-300) for nighttime eating, because I know I will.

Also - try the chocholate cereal from special K - sooo good!

I actually do what tontus suggested a lot. When youve got that minty aftertaste in your mouth it makes everything taste just terrible. and then theres also the "i just brushed i dont want to eat and have to brush again" logic that goes through your head.

but i also have this problem a lot as well. I just try to go to bed or drink ice water.

I have a big issue with late night eating, and evening eating in general.  I find it to be kind of a "nasty habit" I pick up from time to time, to stop I go cold turkey, which is pretty difficult the first three nights, but after that your body gets used to not having the extra calories in the evening and gives up the craving signals.
