last year for about 3 months i started trying to get in really good shape... i started working out and eating 6 small meals a day.
But then I got obsessive and it turned into anorexia. I went vegan... ( I was eating about 600 calories a day) i counted everything i ate and worked out compulsively. I lost about 25 pounds (5'6" went from 143 to 118) i didnt look unhealthy so no one really noticed until I started having chest pain and wound up in the hospital....
I wound up regaining all the weight I'd lost. But now I'm just very unhappy about the way I look...I want to go about losing it again in a healthy way and I'm making a realistic goal... 17 pounds in 10 weeks.

I've convinced myself though that i've screwed up my metabolism so bad that I won't be able to lose weight again...can someone please tell me I'm crazy because I'm getting myself so discouraged at the thought of trying again that I don't see a point.

Honestly, I don't think it screwed up your metabolism that bad, the body is pretty resilient.  I would be more worried about your appetite afterwards.  I think your bodies natural defence to combat starvation (ie anorexia) is to up your appetite.  After I recovered from starving myself I was hungry all the time, I binged like crazy!  I had to re-learn how to eat.  And it's taken me years.  First I ate too little, then I ate too much, it's had it's toll on my body.  My best advice is to take it slow.  Learn to eat the right way, then worry about dieting.  Dieting is not an ED's friend, it just makes them worse.

If you want to lose 17 pounds as fast as possible, you need to make sure that you're following an eating plan which has the following characteristics:

1. It promotes fast weight loss.

2. It's a plan which you can stick to without suffering since it does take some time to lose 17 pounds.

3. It makes it relatively easy to maintain the weight loss. This is important because you're losing weight in order to never gain it back again. Otherwise, it's worthless.
So, what is the weight loss plan you should follow in order to lose 17 lbs?

There is more than one way to lose weight, so you have some options, but I recommend following the Idiot Proof Diet. Why am I recommending this particular program?

1. It produces results. People lose weight with the Idiot Proof diet and they do so at a fast pace. I can't predict how soon you will lose 17 pounds, but it may happen in a little over a month.

2. The Idiot Proof diet is a plan you can definitely stick to for a long time. You get to eat 4 meals a day so you don't starve, it's easy to follow, and you don't need a lot of free time to prepare the meals. Basically it's called the Idiot Proof Diet because it's so simple to follow.

3. The way the Idiot Proof diet is built, it's easy to maintain the weight loss once you lose 17 lbs or whatever it is you want to lose. You manage to lose weight but it doesn't negatively affect your metabolism like other diets do.

Good luck! Everything is possible. I was the same years ago. I lost a lot of weight that people from my youth (classmates from college and highschool, other relatives and other co workers) didn't recognize me but new acquaintances did not think that I was too thin. But it took hold of me. I did not eat meat, eggs, milk nor cheese. All I could think of was what I would be eating or not eating for lunch, and I was easily angered and more hot tempered. I never had chest pains but I wasn't happy.
I gained weight because everyone around me (mostly relatives) keep telling me I need to eat) I know this time I'll try to not let the dieting nor my relatives control me. I was not happy when I was so skinny, but I am not happy now either.

You might have a point about screwing up the metabolism. I have read that those who have lost a lot of weight gain weight faster than before so they have to work extra harder the second time. Once you lose weight again, make sure you maintain it as it would be thrice harder the third time around (hopefully there is no third time).

Do not get discouraged! There are lots of us on the same boat. We just need to encourage each other!

I am sorry that you went off the deep end and developed anorexia and had to be hospitalized, but it happens and it happens to a lot of people!  So, 17 pounds isn't that big of a deal, it's not like you're staring at 50 extra pounds or even 25 extra pounds.  I think that you will be able to shed it for sure in 5 months or so (that's at the longer end).

As OnceUpon said, don't worry that you screwed up your metabolism.  The metabolism adjusts constantly, so once you start eating reguarl healthful meals, your metabolism will be fine and get out of starvation mode.  So don't even worry about that.

If you do want to lose 17 pounds, I would suggest coming up with a plan that will allow you to lose about 1 - 2 pounds a week (I know that might seem like a slow loss but slower loss is more sustainable loss).  Just run the numbers and figure out what kind of a deficit you need each day in order to lose, let's say 1.5 pounds per week.  If I'm not mistaken, that is a 750 calorie deficit a day.

Make sure that you are eating around at least 1200 calories a day though in order to keep yourself from calorically starving.  Eat foods that are filling and full of good nutrients.  This will not only help you lose weight but will help boost your mood.

I would also suggest that whatever exercise you do, make sure you include strength training, exercises that build muscle.  Muscle is great for helping your body burn fat, even in a resting state, as muscles burn a lot of calories just by existing.

I am sure you can do it!  And you can do it healthy and feel good and revitalized while you are doing it!
