Food becomes a problem when it is used to help cope with painful situations or feelings, or to relieve stress without people realising it. Research shown genetic make-up may have a small impact on the development of an eating disorder as can the attitudes of other family members towards food. In situations where there are high academic expectations, family issues or social pressures, focusing on food and eating can be a way of coping with these stresses.
Anorexia: People with this condition develop a fear of fatness going far beyond that of most dieters. The need to control their weight dominates all other emotions and food becomes the central issue of their lives.
Bulimia: also develops from an obsessive desire to be thin. However, instead of not eating, the person alternates between frantic binging and drastic purging (by self-induced vomiting and/or the abuse of laxatives and diuretics) or periods of excessive fasting and exercise.
This can lead to an irregular heartbeat, kidney damage & tooth enamel erosion.
Compulsive Eating: differs from bulimia; after binge eating, people don't try to get rid of what they've eaten. Some feel powerless to control their desire to keep 'comfort eating' & they may develop overweight related health problems.
Binge Eating: includes an obsession with weight and shape. Exercising and the use of vomiting and laxatives to reduce weight are often major elements. Other signs before a person loses a dramatic amount of body weight include:
-failure to notice or be satisfied with the result of exercise
-avoiding food high in carbohydrates
-low mood
-menstrual cycle becomes irregular or ceases
-lack of interest in sex
Both men and women living with Binge Eating Disorder suffer a combination of symptoms similar to those of Compulsive Overeaters and Bulimia. They periodically go on large binges, eating unusually large quantities of food very fast & uncontrollably, until they are uncomfortably full. Their weight is usually above average & they tend to find it harder losing weight and maintaining it.

This website and forum is for everyone and anyone dieting.  Dieting does not have to mean they are too fat.  It can also mean they are too thin.

These forums are to educate and to support these people.  If you are in here then I suppose the topic headline must have caught your attention somehow.

If you are bored and want to criticize people for posting information I suppose you could do that too.

But here's what I am wondering...

If you are in this topic of discussion were you curious about the subject because you know nothing about it OR you are someone suffering from an eating disorder and in denial??

Your remarks come off as slightly offensive as if you were angry that this topic had even been posted.

I myself have known several people with eating disorders.  In college I knew a couple girls who nearly died of anorexia and bulimia.

When they finally came to terms with themselves they wrote a news article in the college paper about their habits and experience and how they came out of it alive.

One girl ate all celery and then would barf it up.  (Celery is a perfect diet food because you spend more calories digesting it than there is in it!)  She suffered from malnutrition.  Her hair fell out, her nails were gnarled and brittle, her skin looked pock marked like she was a meth addict amongst other factors that weren't so obvious.

The other girl ate Carrots.  Only carrots.  She ate so many carrots her skin turned orange from all of the beta carotene in them.  (which takes a lot)  She too suffered from the effects of malnutrition.

When friends and family tried to step in each girl was embarrassed and would get angry and deny there was any problem.  They didn't think there was a problem with what they were doing.  They seriously believed that this was the only way to become beautiful.

Eventually they ended up in the hospital and entered recovery programs and were on the road to health.

Once recovered they wrote about their experiences to share with the public, not their humiliation, but their moment that they came to terms with themselves.  They wanted others to learn from it, understand it, and not do what they did.  And to stop those who were going down that path.

So your comment, to me, is not funny at all and really has no place here.  if you did not mean offense then maybe you should change the wording of your commentary.  There are some people in this world that know nothing about eating disorders.  Maybe they have heard of them but they do not know much.  So I see no problem with an 'educating' post on the subject matter.

Try doing something constructive...

Karels.le,

You go Girl!!:ribbon:  Thank you for the honest reation you posted!  I have thought the same things that you wrote about, but I didn't have the courage to say what I really thought!

No one can imagine the horror and shame that a person with an Eating disorder lives with every single day.  It has always helped me to know that there are others dealing with the same struggles as I.

You ROCK Girl!!
