I don't know exactly what it's called, but I have a habit of speed-eating.
Aparently, you consume more calories when you eat quicker.
Does anyone else on here 'speed-eat'?

I never did that. More just like eating non-stop.
But I did notice that sometimes I would eat something and my mind would be elsewhere so I never even enjoyed it. I mean like I might fight to not buy some donuts for hours, then I would and when I was almost done I'd realize I'd been thinking about my next binge food (now that I'd started my binge) and hadn't even been conscious of their sweet taste!

I do that, it's called "living with 7 people" followed by "living with a growing teenage boy." My brother could clear out two weeks worth of food in two hours. That pretty much set me in speed.
One thing I've found that helps is breaking the meal up into smaller segments. When I was growing up, everything was on the table at the same time, and if you wanted it, you grabbed and gobbled. Now, salad has its own place, its own dish, and there's time between that and whatever the entree will be. Dessert is at least half an hour after that...by then, I can tell if I'm actually still hungry, or just greedy .

Oh I so know how you feel. I think you consume more clas when you eat like that b/c you eat so fast you don't really feel like you ate much so you want more. atleast that is how it is for me.
I try and put smaller amount of food on my plate. So I can have seconds and it isn't so bad. I also try and remind myself to slow down. It is not a race.

That's exactly why. I've been putting smaller amounts and tell myself to slow down, but I still eat fast! Although I've noticed that I eat less because I've been getting full quicker. I think my stomach may have shrunk.

| As your body weight decreases, your brain signals that you should eat less because you have less body and weight to maintain, sounds logical, doesnt it?At least thats my theory.

I speed eat so I measure what I eat and don't eat more. But everything is gone in 10 seconds. I also count points (50 calories is 1 point) and try only to have certain amount of points a day. Vegatables are all you can eat so I usually eat alot of them. I think I'm funny I tell everyone if I really tasted my food I'd be pickier. Now I can eat anything.

I'm a speed-eater. When I weigh and measure my food it noticably slows down the eating experience (temporarily - the eating is still done quickly).
On the other hand, because most of what I eat (by volume) is some kind of vegetable, that means the rate at which I can eat calories is moderated. In fact I think I spend some hours eating every day, and that is despite not wanting it to take too much of my life.
If I didn't care about the quality of my food, I could pick food (e.g. chocolate) that would allow me to consume my daily calorie allowance in a couple of minutes.

| I'm not sure how you would consume more calories speed eating. I mean as far as food goes if you put 100 calories on your plate and you plan to eat all of what is on it, you're going to get 100 calories reguardless of how fast or slow you eat. I suppose you could get less by eating slower simply because your body gets more time to digest but this sounds like the only likely reason. Anyway, yeah eating fast is hard to recover from. I've managed to eat slowly durring breakfast, and am trying durring dinner. I find it's best to occupy myself with either a Sudoku or look at the CNN homepage so Breakfast isn't the only thing concerning me. Unfortunately this is pretty much pointless because come lunch time I just can't eat slow, with either lunch or a snack. It's just a matter of conciously realizing you have to eat slow and snapping out of eating fast but lets face it, many of us, in the presence of chocolate or some other favored food will not always think clearly. Just TRY to chew slow and best of luck to you.

| I'm pretty sure I 'speed eat' too, but I've been trying to slow down recently. It's really noticable when I'm eating with my friends, cause I would be done and they would have just started. I tend to have seconds a lot, because of this.

Guilty as charged, though I've not had the extream circumstances others have had.
I lived with three adults (Two grandparents and my Mom) and a younger(a year and 28 days) sister.
My speed eating comes from when food was made, I was usually the last one to know; thus usually got the worse-off peices or whatever was left in the pot/pan, so when I wasn't the last to know, I grabbed what I could, and gobbled it before the others got it so I wouldn't be stuck with leftovers. They never intended to let me be the last to know, they'd just assumed I knew cause my sister would pass by my room often enough, or when I moved my room to the basement, assumed I heard them (when I hadn't, or when I'd barly heard then and called up to question what they'd said and they wouldn't hear me.)
Even my friends commented on how quickly I finish my food. Even though I try and slow down, this 'speed eating' is prooving a habit that's gonna be stubborn to break.

I think it takes your brain like 20 minutes to tell your stomach that it is full and satiated, so the quicker you eat, the less full you feel and the more you're apt to eat...or so I've read.
I have to consciously force myself to slow down when I eat as I am often the first person done at the table. I've used all of the tricks in the book - sipping water between each bite, putting the fork/knife/utensils down between each bite, chewing each bite at least 20 times...but ultimately the best thing that works for me is great conversation. If I'm eating with someone interesting and we're having great conversation, I'll get so wrapped up in it that I can't eat quickly.

I Know about speed eating. My grandfather use to have a farm. We didn't have 1/2 hour to an hour to eat. It was like 10-15 minutes. Many of my jobs I didn't punch out. You ate when you had time then got right back to work. Food got inhaled and I know that's not good for anyone.
Like others said, eating any faster or slower will not change the caloric intake. If you eat a Weight Watchers Meal that has 300 calories, that is what you are consuming. No more, no less.

I'm on the same boat but i've gotton a lot better about it. Here's what I try to do
- break food up into smaller pieces
- chew at least 15-25 times
- PUT THE FORK DOWN INBETWEEN CHEWING**

I now treat mealtime as an "event". This makes all the difference for me.
I try to "savor" each bite and make it last forever.....It generally takes me 50-75 minutes to eat a meal. This ANNOYS the @*^&%*^@$# out of most folks eating with me, but toobad, toosad for them!

I definitely do this. I've gotten where I cook a lot of spicy foods which slows me down and I generally drink more water too which also helps.
There are some things like pasta for instance that I have to be really careful about. I can eat a ridiculous amount before it hits me.
