Hi

I started my diet again this week and I am wondering if there is a limit on the amount of diet soda I should consider on my diet. I would really appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

Julia

Hi There

Well, I can not offer specifics but I can tell you I have heard many things about diet pop. While it may have no calories many do not think folks out there should consume too much of it for while it is low in calories it does have chemicals. I have heard that the aspartame is not all that great for ones health. So, the rule I follow is that it is still somewhat of a treat. Stick to water, the best thing for you and go ahead, treat yourself to a diet pop once in a while.

A few things: diet pop has been shown to increase appetite in those on a redueced calorie diet; carbonated beverages have been also shown to increase the risk of cancer of the esophagus in men that drink >12 oz/day; and aspartame is only toxic to those people who cannot metabolize phenylalanine, a component of aspartame.

I avoid soda (diet or regular). I drink a lot of flavored, 0-calorie water drinks. That helps if you don't want to drink boring old water.

I drink diet Coke all the time. 0 Calories, the caffeine makes you feel more energized (good for those sluggish low carb days) and I like the fizzy taste. Body builders will drink up to a case a day when cutting because it acts as a diurhetic also. That much is definitely not healthy, but I drink a can or 2 per day.

No they dont because of the sodium it contains which will retain water.

You're right, sodium does retain water. But I'm sure when I read about it, it was during the earlier stages of fat loss. Water manipulation occurs in later stages of the cutting phase does it not?

They will drop out sodium completely in the weeks before a comp, then carbs a few days out and carb up the day before a show to super-hydrate their muscle glycogen stores which sort of 'inflate' their muslces moreso than if they didnt carb deplete. I know a couple of friends that have competed but they didnt use diet pop as a cutting tool, there are many ways to skin a cat though.
