Well, Hi there, and welcome Phemie!
As for a starting place, it all depends on how obsessive you want to be about your weight loss. :)
You can, try to go on extra long walks every day, try to eat 500 calories less than you normally would (which adds up to 3500 calories a week which = 1 pound)
or
you could begin to change your diet toward the better in an attempt to "live healthier"... which can be a bit larger of a commitment/count calories to make sure you're not eating too much / Work toward replacing your staple foods with healthier alternatives, park further away from places to get exercise, or start a cardio/weight lifting program.
The gain in weight you have seen in your previous experience may be due to muscle gain - which in turn helps you fight fat, which is what you want, i think. :)
There is a large spectrum where many people fall, as far as the effort people put into their weight loss goals.
Ultimately, it comes down to a hard choice. Do you eat junk food because it's festive, or do you want to lose weight? Would you rather drink alcohol to be festive, or take away the pounds you gained? Are you willing to learn to discipline yourself better when it comes to food, or do you want to remain at your weight? These are questions that all of us had to ask ourselves and it's hard for all of us.
If i were you, I'd try to reduce (not eliminate) the amount of junk food + alcohol + calories per day until either you get the results you want, or become comfortable making other permanent changes. Make an effort to do a little exercise every day. Just do what you can, go for a short walk. I think we all have the power to take control of our bodies, but it is a #%@&! hard process sometimes.
Also, take a look at the eating/dieting tutorials on this site.

Try to use the calculators if you wish, many of us trust em pretty well!
I wish you the best of luck with your goals Phemie, and remember if you're having a particularly rough day, it can help to get it out in the diary section of the forums.
Good luck!

Phemie:
Welcome! I sound a lot like you in that I do love to eat and i do love to drink. I am like the female homer simpsons lol!
I wanted to tell you that I purchased a few tools that were very helpful in helping me lose weight. One was a pedomemter--really cheap, you can find them for about 7 bucks including shipping. These encourage you to walk more, and help you track it. Walking is a GREAT way to shed fat because walking burns up a lot of calories. Every mile burns 100 calories and 2,000 steps = 1 mile.
I also got a scale that also measures body fat. I am indeed obsessive about weighing myself, and the body fat scale is good because it lets you know if you are losing fat, water, muscle, etc. Plus, I KNOW you don't like resistance training (exercises that build muscle) but resistance training is GREAT for helping you burn fat because it puts more muscle on your body and muscles burn up calories just by exisiting, even when you aren't using them. Also, as you know, muscle weighs much more than fat, inch for inch. So, if you are doing resistance training and building muscle, you could be reconfiguring your body so that it has more muscle and less flab BUT a scale that only tells total weight will make you feel like you are getting heavier because it only tells you total weight, not fat weight or lean weight. But if you have a scale that measures body fat, you can see if you are losing fat weight even if you are gaining muscle.
and just a PS, when I was starving myself and popping diet pills, I weighed around 120. But when I was eating right and exercising a lot, I weighed 135, yes a higher number, but my body looked MUCH sleeker, sexier, and less flabby.

I would suggest starting out small. Change one thing about your diet or exercise and then just keep doing it.
Like start to buy whole wheat products. Once you get use to that, then start to drink water, then just keeping adding things.
I started that way. After awhile you are trying to be healthy and not really looking at it from a dieting point of view. If you eat healthy foods, then the weight will fall off.
You said your not really disciplined. One thing that might help you with that is to do some reading on the types of foods that you are putting into your body. That will change the way you think about the foods, and help you with that discipline a little.
Exercise- nobody starts out hard core. Just do a little a day, and it will get easier and better each day. I started out walking (still do at times). But, I would only do a mile and the lowest speed on my treadmill, lol. I am now walking and jogging on it at a much higher rate. I now, rarely get off the thing before the 4mile mark. It just takes time to work yourself up.
Good Luck to you and welcome to the site...

I know you are looking for the quick fix but you need to look the long term. That is first thing you need to do. Yeah losing the alcohol is one of many keys to weight loss. I drank like 3 times in about 7 months and I was weekend drinker. Your have taken one step and that is wanting to change. Honestly don't worry about fitting into some clothes by feb cause that will only set you down when you don't fit into them. Just change your goal time frame and when you do fit into them then great. You are gonna have to cardio and weights to loose no if an's or buts about it. I was not a well discplined person either til I started my journey and then boom 9 months later I was 77lbs lighter. You got to really want to do it or it will not work. Stick around here and good luck

Welcome phemie! I didn't read through all the advice so someone may have already suggested this, but...
You might consider starting a diary on here they actually help quite a bit and read other people's diaries and see what has worked for them. That has helped me a lot over the past year or so. We are all different and so there are different things that work better for some and maybe not others. A lot of weight loss is trial and error.
The people on here are great though and there's lots of support whether you are just starting, or get stuck or even manage to lose a pound or two. There's always somebody here to cheer you on!
Best of luck and welcome to the family!
