During lunch today it occurred to me that we all have to have something up our sleeve that tricks our mind to think we are eating Way More than we actually are. Lately I?óÔé¼Ôäóve started using those really small hole graters when I grate cheese on anything. A standard 1in square goes a lot further with littler shreds. My girlfriend read (and started doing) giving us the smaller plates at dinner.
I'm wondering what other little tricks do all of you have out there that could help us think we are getting more with our eyes than we actually are with our stomachs?

Hey JoeKing:
This is kind of a neat topic...I don't know how I missed it earlier. The smaller plate thing has never worked for me - I guess my mind knows it's a small plater and goes "nice try, but I'm not fooled ". But I totally do the grated cheese thing...the more finely grated the better....I usually find that 1/2 oz of finely grated cheese provides just enough of that cheesy taste to satisfy me as a whole oz of non grated cheese.
I guess veggies are my favorite "trick" though....especially broccoli, eggplant & cauliflower, because they take up so much room on the plate (and in my belly)....they visually satisfy the greedy part of me that enjoys actually seeing "a lot of food" on my plate.

I just try and eat slowly (sometimes this can be hard) and take tiny bites. I look like a mouse eating a sandwich *nibble*. Works for me though because the food last much longer.
Another trick of mine is too eat with chopsticks, it slows me down considerably and I can only pick up little mouthfuls. Just so long as you cut up your food first!

| Like Suenos, the vegetable thing works for me. With a plate looking full of veggies and the feeling of fullness it gives me I always end up feeling as if I have had as much as everyone else around me, but then I feel superior because mine was healthy and non-fattening and I wont be sorry later.

Oh, i thought of something else I do. Which, i actually do it for taste, but it works to cut down calories too. Whenever I have a glass of chocolate milk, I have half chocolate and half white...the chocolate is more calories, so that way I get the same chocolately taste with a smaller dent in my calorie budget

My "tricks"

- Small Plates, <6 inch
- Lots 'O Veggies,
- Cut "really small" bites,
- Chew each bite 30 times,
- Set my eating utensils down in-between each bite,
- Have the waitstaff put "half" my dinner in a to go box BEFORE they serve it to me,
- Add 10% to the calorie count of everything I eat,
- Subtract 10% to all the calories I burn,
- Use an Mp3 player and always add "one more song" to each workout segment,

| Just about EVERYTHING tastes "nasty" when you eat it just after brushing your teeth. So after a sensible meal, or when I'm tempted to snack, I'll brush my teeth and use a rinse. My dentist gave me the idea.

Good one Bean! I do that too (the brushing teeth thing).
In order to trick my mind into thinking I'm eating more, I do lots of things. First off, I cut everything into really small bites and put all my meals on small plates.
Also, I eat a Lean Pocket almost every day -- I'm awful at cooking my own meals. I'll admit, they're not the best for you, but they're not THAT unhealthy. So what I do with my Lean Pocket is...I cut it in half and put it on a small plate. It somehow looks so much bigger that way.
And my favourite way of tricking myself into thinking I'm eating more: if my family makes meat for dinner, I'll make salad and take tiny pieces of meat and put it in the salad. I could have a huge salad and just a little bit of meat, and it'll feel like I'm eating a dinner of "meat and veggies". Kind of hard to explain, but it works.
