I am a mother of 2 kids, 4 and 6 years old. I work full time and I am the breadwinner in my family.  Between, working, taking care of the kids, househould duties, many times I feel overwhelmed and turn to food for comfort. I will be good for 1 or 2 weeks, eat right and exercise and then a stressful situation happens (could be as little as the kids fighting at dinner time) and I breakdown and start eating  junk and forgoing my exercise routine. I have always struggled with the last few pounds, but what used to be 5 pounds and has now turned to 10 and I am going on 15. I love to exercise and that is not a problem. I can work out 4 to 5 days a week. It is my willpower with food and always feeling hungry especially after a good workout, half the time I overeat after I workout. Any suggestions? I was thinking about ordering food online like the Zone Diet. Perhaps if I have invested money towards eating properly I will find the willpower to follow through. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks:crying:

I could make a suggestion, based on something my sister in law did.  She put together a healthy snack drawer in the fridge.  It had sweet (fruits), savory (celery/cheese) and salty (crackers, etc.).  The drawer was available to both her and the kids, and had some diversity.

My biggest problem wasn't when my kids were young (two inside 17 months...), it was when we all discovered *sugar.*

Glad Annie has Judo...

I recall reading that the human trigger for thirst is not well developed and that sometimes we mistake it for hunger pains.  Try drinking several glasses of water, or salted orange juice.  I know that combination sounds terrible but if you are dehydrated and low on salt, it tastes great, if it tastes bad you haven't lost much salt during your exercise (the only time this combination tasted good to me was when we were reroofing a pavilion in a Southern California August).

Then wait an hour and see if you are still hungry, if you are probably a piece of fruit may be quite sufficient.

Hi,

I understand were you coming from. Try nuts and  there are good protein-bars out there as well. I have found at walmart, they have Turkey. It looks like a piece of Ham, but its Turkey. You can have that with a Tomato & its great. Try also to drink more water, at times we are not hungry just thirsty. Good luck.

Rather than (expensive) protein bars, you might like to check out my chocolate banana oatcake recipe (click the link).  Others have come up with some interesting variants.

Get the children to help make them.  If they like the taste, they'll be less likely to eat junk.  So you could end up with a healthy family, everyone reinforcing your own efforts to beat the urge to eat no-no's.

For posiitive feedback to reinforce your weight-loss efforts, I always recommend buying a cheap skinfold calliper (measures body fat %).   That way, you have something more accurate and informative than your bathroom scales to help keep you on track.

Good luck (and happy baking).

I know your situation. I'm kinda living it still myself - full time job and 3 kids (14 yrs, 9 yrs, 10 month) My husband helpes out alot, but now he works a second job in the evening and it seems I'm stuck with everything that goes on at home. Overwhelmed is the right word to use!

Since my husband often works evenings I feel guilty for leaving the kids home alone so I can go exercise. I try to combine child care and exercise by taking the children to the park. I have the baby in a carrier and walk around the playground. Sometimes I use my ankle weights as "dumbells" sometimes I just walk. It's relaxing and gives me much needed exercise. As for eating junk - don't buy it! that what works best for me! Even when I think I buy chips for the kids, I know I'll end up eating them. So the kids and me both have carrots, watermelon and cucumber for snacks. It's better for all of us anyway!

But I have my "dirty indulgenec secret" too - I reach for cigarettes to calm me. I quit smoking when I got pregnant and stayed "clean" for a long time. It doesn't make me feel better when I smoke, I hate myself for not being stronger and giving in to the temptation. I tell myself since I only smoke a very few cigarettes in the evening, I'll be fine, but I know, I shouldn't smoke at all. I can tell the next day when I go work out, that my performance suffers because I have breathing problems.

I keep my fingers cross for you and hope you can bring up all the willpower you need to succeed.
