Too Much Too FAst

Well, I started getting serious about getting healthy this week. While I think it's great to have short term goals, my main goal is not a weight or a size, but just be to be healthy. To feel healthy and have an active lifestyle...for good! 

I started the week at 261 and am now at 251. I know that while there are guidelines and certain paths to follow for healthy weight loss; there's not an exact science to it all. Well, I guess there can be an exact science, but then you'd lose your sanity! But my question is this: Is 10 lbs a week too much too fast?

I was so excited I had to check the scale several times and think very carefully to be sure I really was wearing the same clothes I was at my first weigh-in and that everything was exactly right. While I think it would be great for me mentally to have these kind of results every week, I'm concerned about how healthy it is and why I had such drastic results. Any thoughts?

I'm assuming this healthier way of eating is new for you and that you haven't been doing it for very long, correct?  If so, then a lot of what you lose in the first week or 2 is water weight. It is very normal to have big losses for the first few weeks, but they will slow down as you continue on.  Lots of the #%@&! in junk food and unhealthier choices cause you to retain water, so when you stop eating those foods (or as much of them), your body lets go of some of that water.  Additionally, if you have started drinking more water and eating healthier foods, you are giving your body more water, which also helps to get ride of water you may have been retaining (when you don't get enough water regularly, your body holds onto as much of it as it can since it realizes it's not getting a sufficient steady supply).

In any case, congrats on the loss!  If you are still losing as rapidly after a month of your healthier lifestyle, that might be a bit of a red flag, but in the beginning, it's pretty normal.  Also, the more you weigh to start with, the more you can safely lose each week.  A max loss of 2 pounds a week might be fine when you only have, say, 20 pounds to lose total, but it's pretty normal to lose quicker at first when you've got a lot of weight to lose (I'm not sure what your goal is, so I don't know how much you have to lose, but I belong to a group of women who started at 300+ pounds, and losing 5-7 pounds a week is pretty common there).

I would say as long as you've lost the weight by making healthier choices and habits (no 500-calorie-a-day crash diets or any such nonsense :wink:), then keep up the good work!

More than eating unhealthy THINGS, I was eating TOO much. It may just be that I am still in denial of how bad my diet really was, but I think the weight gain had more to do with portion control that anything. Whether it was too much in general or poor choices in what I was eating, it was unhealthy and caused me to gain weight. I was also on a drug called metformin for diabetes. I've heard from others who were on the drug that it made them gain weight as well...go figure.

I've never had such drastic results. The biggest change has been portions and a lot more excersize than what I was accustomed to. I haven't really changed the amount of water I drink. I've never really been a big juice/soda drinker and have always LOVED water and lots of it. At any rate, I figured some...or a lot of those 10 could be water and expected that, but I was just a little concerned since I'd never seen that much change and wanted some advice.

Anlu,

    Have you thought about starting a diary, in the diary section of the :cph: forums, to record your healthy eating, weight loss journey?    There's a lot of support there, and it's good to have it to look back on to see where you've been.   We'd love to have you join us!

I've actually already got a "diary". I have a blog on xanga.com that I write on regularly.  I've thought about posting them here, but I'm not sure if I really want to or not. I'll check it out and think about it some more.

Never mind this week, if you look at your loses in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks:

The maths of weight loss:

a loss of 1lb in a week corresponds to a calorie deficit of 500 calories per day.
a loss of 2lb in a week corresponds to a calorie deficit of 1000 calories per day.
a loss of 3lb in a week corresponds to a calorie deficit of 1500 calories per day.
a loss of 4lb in a week corresponds to a calorie deficit of 2000 calories per day.

However, if your calorie deficit represents a high percentage of your maintenance calories (if it represents more than 15%-20% of your maintenance calories) then you may be storing problems for later: a severe calorie restriction will slow down your metabolism and make it harder for you to lose later on. Your body will also resort to eating up its own muscle for energy in such a situation. If you have not read so already, please read:  What It Takes to Lose It All

I recommend using the RMR calculator (link at bottom of the page) to calculate your RMR, so you know how many calories you should be eating.

I've already poked around the site and a few others too quite a bit before I started this week. Truth is, I'm determined I'd do it the right way so it can be a lifestyle change and not just a phase. I want to make the right choices for good.
