| To each their own on their weight loss trips but for me...I didn't follow any of those Fad diets...I don't believe the are healthy and you are with holding foods you want from yourself constantly and sooner or later you're going to crack up and hold up a Freeto's truck. What *I* did to lose my first 30 LB's was pretty simple...I counted calories. I kept track of what I ate and wrote it down along with the calories it held. I found out how many calories I should be allotted per day in order to lose what I wanted (1500...but I try to stick to 1300) and wrote what I ate down. If, at the end of the day, I had say...300 calories left, I'd have a small bowl of ice cream. I didn't NOT get to eat things. But I definetly would STOP eating certain things simply because I know that if I eat that big peice of chocolate cake or that fried donut, I'm not going to be able to eat a whole lot more for the rest of the day. Then throw in some light exercise. I'm a 20 year old college student. A gym simply does NOT fit in my budget..even a cheap one. At any given time I don't know how much will be in my checking account so I can't chance having a certain amount of money taken out each month. Not to mention, even 30 bucks a month could be my grocery's and I DO have to eat! So the gym being out...I run. I walk. I bike. I rollerblade. I hike. I dance. And I lost 30 LB's doing that. Not only is this a great way to lose weight but it gets to you start practising healthy eating habits because you look around for healthier things so you can eat more and not less. Filling things so you don't have to worry about eating again in an hour (Step AWAY from the Chinese Buffet!!!). Seriously, it's the best thing I've ever tried. I went from 236 LBS and an 18 to 206 LB's and a size 14. I'm still working on losing another 20 before my 21st birthday which is January 27th...3.33 LB's a month..I think I can do it!:D My overall goal is to lose another 40 LB's and be in the 160's...I remember being SO scared at first. My goal this entire time has been to lose 70 LB's...that's so scary at first. It seems impossible..you absalutly CANNOT think in terms of losing 70 LBs because it gets so overwelming you can't handle it. Just do it. Just start counting calories and exercising. Or whatever works for you...my method might not work the same for everyone. I've lost 30 LB's and now that 20 I want to lose isn't looking so scary. #%@&!, not even the 40 is looking nearly as scary as that 70 did although it's pretty scary so I dont focus on it. It's really hard, at first, not to focus on your overall goal but with time it gets easier. *big huggies to all* We can doooo eeet!!!!!!!!!:D

Welcome. And if you don't believe in fad diets, well that's what this site is all about. You've come to the right place.
Very funny about holding up the Fritos truck, and STEP AWAYS FROM THE CHINESE BUFFET!

| I also don't believe in fads. When it comes to losing or maintaining weight It's not just about counting points, carbohydrates, fats .... It's as simple as taking in fewer or as many calories than what is expended over a period of time. The best ways to lose weight are to exercise on a rugular basis. Do not skip meals. Always eat breakfast and eat regularly during the day. Eat appropriate portion sises of foods. Eat smaller portions of high calorie foods and greater portions of lower calorie foods. Eat a balanced diet that includes foods that are higher in micro nutrients, protein and fiber which are generally low in calories and keep you full or satisfied longer and you will be less likely to overeat these foods. Limit or avoid packaged food products from grocery stores or other stores as they often contain toxic, addictive, harmful ingredients or may have ingredients that cause weight gain. Try to avoid adding extra fat or sugar in food, it will add unnecesary calories to your diet and also avoid adding too much salt to food as it may cause complications or illness. Foods that come directly from nature already provide a perfect balance and quantity of nutrients and calories.

You had to say Chinese! My weakness!
Hi, I also agree that fad diets don't work. I started out on July 30. I have lost 14 lbs. I cut out nearly all (I say nearly, because occasionally I fold) junk food, I eat only whole wheat bread, pasta and rice, lean beef, skinless chicken and baked or broiled fish. I have increased my vegetable and fruit intake, I never miss breakfast, and I count calories, fat grams, cholesterol (mine's high), carbs, fiber and protein. I deduct fiber grams from my carb total for net carbs. I try to keep the percentage of calories ratio as follows. 40-30-30. Carbs/fat/protein respectively. To maintain my desired weight (140) I need 1540 - 1560 cals. per day. I stick around 1400, but even if I go over, I make up for it the next day by eating less. I drink a lot of Crystal Light iced tea and water while I'm working (I drive a school van). I try to go out walking two or three nights a week with my son. We usually do a brisk 1.5 miles. The first ten pounds came off very fast. Within the first two to three weeks. Now I'm down to about 1 - 2 lbs. a week which is fine by me. I'm 48 years old next week and I started at 240 lbs. I weighed myself this morning and I'm down to 226. So it's a good start.
I forgot to mention portion sizes. I fill my plate with veggies first then I usually have a fist size portion of meat or fish and a fist size portion of rice or pasta. When I do cave to junk food, it's usually MetRx bars. I love the chocolate/peanut butter one. It's packed with fiber so the carbs don't hurt so much. I also like an occasional restaurant meal, so I just try to stay in the limits as much as I can. For snacks, I'll have a fruit and yogurt parfait from McDonald's, or a fat free yogurt, or even a fat free frozen fudge stick.
This is a lifestyle I can live with for the rest of my life so it's more likely to last than if I was to deprive myself of my beloved carbs. I'm a pasta freak and if I couldn't have it I wouldn't be able to stick to this. My rewards are going to be that every ten pounds I lose, I will treat myself to a night out for Chinese. Anything I want.
I have found that I fill up faster now and that I am not craving anything anymore.
I would love to hear from anyone who might have comments on my post, or anyone who is just looking for a shoulder to cry on when the scale won't move! LOL

| I'm new to this forum. I want you to know that I also started counting my calories last week. I put myself on a 1750 calorie diet. With that amount I should lose 2 lbs. a week. Guess What? I lost 3.2 lbs. I'm really haveing a hard time eating that many calories. I stay between 900 and 1400 calories without trying. I work in a nursing home and I walk a lot. My feet are always sore but then when I get a day off I feel funny not walking so I find myself getting on my treadmill until my feet hurt again.Do you have any suggestions on this matter.
