It's a simple idea; I've heard about it before, but this is the first time I'll be trying it.
I'm a 21 year old, 170 pound, 6'2'' male. I have just a wee bit of excess around the belly and my legs that I'd like to see disappear. So I was thinking of switching from 3 meals a day to much smaller 5-6 meals per day (keeps my metabolism going and prevents me from binging). Is this effective? And if so, how far should I space the meals apart and how many calories should they be ideally?

BMI 21.8 unadjusted RMR 1846 (do not eat any less than that number; if you exercise a lot consider eating back a proportion of your exercise calories)
Identifying a tendancy to binge-eat is certainly a first step in self awareness.
Some people over-eat if they have not eaten for a long period of time, so eating regularly is a useful 'trick'. You can divide into 1846 into any number of meals you chose. For example 6 calorie-equal meals would be 1846/6 = 307
You might find that binge eating has more to do with certain triggers. For example I find that when I have some chocolate or ice-cream I eat it more quickly than other people around me and I want more. Sure, I can be disciplined and control myself but my life becomes simpler when I just abstain from such triggers entirely. That is just me though, you'll have to find your own truth!
