Hi,
I work as a recepcionist in a 5 star hotel. I?é??m always being watched by my bosses and they have made it very clear to me that my appearance is more important than the job itself as I am the image of the hotel, being the first person that the clients see when they check in.
I was even told that I should not wear my glasses and get contact lenses. I ignore this comment, there is nothing wrong with my glasses, they are expensive and trendy. Also I have seen recepcionists in other hotels wearing glasses and I think that it looks the part. I was also told that they like their recepcionists to be tall, blonde and beautiful, that they would prefer a model! Being brunette and short I thought this was mean as I put 100% into my job and believe I am a good worker.
It is true that I need to concentrate on getting healthy clear skin and also some advice about suitable makeup and hairstyles. I have brown medium hair which I normaly straighten and wear hairbands.
My skin is sensitive, dry in parts, and spotty in other parts.
WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE FOR FACE / HAIR?

I hate to say this but the job market is brutal:
"I was also told that they like their recepcionists to be tall, blonde and beautiful, that they would prefer a model!"
I'd suggest going blonde at a good hairstylist.

| Well at least you have the advantage of knowing what kind of people you really work for. The nice thing about your job is you'll come in contact with a lot of people. Even with things as bad as they are who knows, if someone's impressed with you, you may wind up with another job offer! ;-) Play their game until a better opportunity comes along.

To the OP: Fortunately, I don't work in a field where appearance is as important as yours.
Even if you don't go blonde, you can still dress well and style your hair nicely. Maybe get highlights if they look good with your skin?

AnneMarie,
I have a MAJOR problem with this. Did they hire you without knowing what you looked like? Was there no face to face interview?
If there was a face to face then they hired you knowing you weren't the " tall, blonde and beautiful, model!" I do agree you are their "image" to the guests. Be the best YOU, you can be. Dress properly, do your hair and makeup to flatter you. Change to fit THEIR desire, I think NOT!!
Smile Always, be polite and be your best. If you cave to their wants who knows what they will want next.

they did see me before they hired me, but I didnt wear my glasses for the interview.
They have renewed my contract until december but my boss says that it was a real fight to get my contract renewed, that the other boss didnt want to. she said that they need me because people are going on their holidays in these next months and they need me to do their shifts.
I have a horrible timetable, the one that nobody wants and theyve made it clear to me that I have to grin and bare that. they also said that after my contract runs out in december they dont think that theyll be needing me. hopefully I will find another job by january so if they do need me I can tell them I have another job.
It just makes me feel sad that I put a lot of effort into my job but I need to turn myself into a bimbo to be noticed. there is only so much I can do to better myself.
I?é??m trying to learn more about makeup and hairstyles, but its a bit hard when I dont have friends and my mom is living a 2h plane ride away from me.
There is one thing I can do though, and thats look after my skin, Its quite damaged so I?é??m trying to drink more water and clean it more often.

Ah, Anne Marie, what a depressing situation. I'd say, "Quit immediately!" if it wasn't for the fact that, as TankGirl said, jobs are hard to find right now.
So, if you want to keep the job, I'll try to help you look at the bright side.
1. You've very pretty already as we can see by your avatar.
2. It never hurts to learn how to maximize your potential while you're young enough to fully benefit from it.
Back in the day, before I got old and fat, I was a receptionist for one of the world's biggest companies inside the world's biggest office building (hint, it was shaken by an earthquake the other day.)
My hair was a naturally dark brunette when young but I went blonde after I started to go gray. If I had it to do over again I probably would go blonde much earlier. It brings a little something extra to your looks for relatively little time and money. Get it done professionally the first time and after that you can keep it up with home color most of the time. It's a lot of bang for the buck.
I wore soft contacts for work and glasses at home and, again, if I had it to do over again I would have had laser surgery for the convenience of no glasses 24/7. Maybe you could get your company to pay for it since they're all about looks?
Here was my beauty routine all those years, (I maintained 110 lbs during that time.)
Mornings:
Up, coffee, 10 minutes toning exercises, 20 minutes jumping rope.
Shower, including hair washing daily.
Blow hair dry and set on jumbo rollers (this stretches and smooths out the natural frizz and gives "body," to the hair. It should provide a loose wave for you and look more professional than straight hair. I think it would flatter your narrow face (like mine was.)
While your hair is on the rollers brush teeth (have them whitened if need be.)
Apply foundation over face and neck in a shade to match your skin. If you have a little acne or sun discoloration use a make-up that promises coverage such as Clinic's "Continuous coverage." Be careful to blend it well around your hair line and eyes so that there's no "mask" line.
Use blusher, sweeping it out over cheekbones toward the hair line.
Use eye shadow in a grayish tone along the crease of your eye lid blending outward so that it looks as though your eyelashes have cast a shadow above the eye. Apply eye liner carefully, from the inside of your eye outward drawing as close to the lashes as possible. Start just after the tear ducts to make your eyes look wider and avoid making your eyes water and sting. Use mascara in black.
Use lip gloss or lipstick in any shade you like. If you line your lips with a fine lip pencil first, your lips will look fuller and your lipstick will appear to last longer. It's one of those tricks that may seem a little "old," to you but if done with a subtle hand will help give you the professional, polished look you're going for.
Carry pressed powder and lipstick for touch-ups through the day.
Dress, then comb out hair.
Perfume optional.
After work I washed every bit off with soap and water.
(This is probably TMI but I had fun writing it. Best of luck!)

I never had totally clear skin until I started eating alot of raw fruits and vegetables. I do not use any skin beauty products whatsoever. I wash my face daily with body wash and I scrub it twice a week with plain old baking soda. That's it.
The secret to radiant, blemish free skin is raw food- enzymes intact. You may not believe me, but it works. Raw food also gets your teeth whiter than any whitening treatment you can buy either over the counter or get through your dentist. Do a bit of research on the power of raw food and you will see what I'm talking about.
At one point my diet was 90% raw fruits and vegetables and my skin was georgeous. Now, I eat about 130 grams of protein a day because I'm trying to build muscle, so I'm more like 30% raw. But even at that level, it's has a tremendous effect in how my skin looks and feels.

I have to say Im in a similar position with skin care. I don't have to look good for work or anything, but I want to look good for me and I find that my bad skin really knocks my confidence. At the moment I am using Dermalogica scrub, cleanser and moisturiser and a vitamin e eye cream and toner. I wash my face morning and night. My boyfriend had bad skin and now swear by using body wash but I worry that it will make it worse.
On your haircare front, I personally much prefer brunette hair, I think it looks spohisticated and stylish and I think using one of the earlier tips with rollers on it could be all you need.
I also agree with you on glasses, I think they are appropriate for the role and I like the look of trendy glasses.
As someone who does a lot of travelling, I would much rather be greated by a friendly face and someone who is helpful and knowledgable about their job than someone who can giggle and throw their hair around! But that's just me and as people have pointed out, jobs are scarce. The right job will come along, just grin and bare it until then! :)
Hope this helps a little?
