I am a 25 male college student who weighs over 450 pounds(not sure since weight scale measures to 450). I was given some Physician Fast dietary items and was going to do the Fast diet of 700 calories a day. After looking on 20 different calories burned calculator websites, with my weight and working out over an hour a day, I would use about 5700 calories a day. The net calories lost a day is 5000, and in 7 days would be 35,000. Thats equal to 10 pound in a week! Is this a good thing? I drink a gallon of water or more a day. Sorry about the math, I am a Mathematics major and wanted to do the science behind losing weight.

The first week (if it is your first week of weight loss) you will lose Much more than 10 pounds considering you are 450 because in your body you store carbs in the form of glycogen in muscles and liver and that is a lot of water weight on top of the 10 pounds from calorie deficit. So do not be surprised if you lose 20+ pounds on your first week. Happy losing!

One thing I do regret not doing after losing 100 pounds is keep progress pic journal, which you should start doing!

Will you consistently lose 10lb a week?

Well after a little while your body might notice you're only getting 700 calories a day and might become a little more 'efficient' at the use of calories - so you will continue to lose but a little slower.

Drinking 700 calories in nutrition shakes does not teach you how to eat, these life skills of maintaining whatever weight loss you achieve are incredibly important.

Having reached a weight of > 450lb we can hopefully agree that you need some sort of 're-training' as far as food types and amounts are concerned and the sooner this training starts the better for you.

good luck

I recommend lurking around weight lifting / bodybuilding websites to see how they do "cuts" where they eat whey protein/egg whites/ vegetables / lean meats / low Glycemic carbs.

That is pretty much diet food.

Consistently fasting or restricting, like Nir said, is not the way to go. Eventually, your body will kick into starvation mode, and become efficient at running on lower calorie levels. When you return to normal eating, your weight will soar again because your metabolism has slowed.

You should never eat less than 1200 calories a day on a weight loss plan. If you are 450lbs, that may even be too little. Your best bet is zig-zagging in my opinion. For example, in a week you would eat 1500 one day, 1200 another, 1500 again, 1000, 1800, 1200, 1400... These may not be accurate numbers, lol, just an example. You would need to do the math.

Anyway, by shaking things up, your metabolism can never get used to any single amount and thus continues burning at a steady rate, even if you do restrict to very low calories for a day or two. Never go for too long on too little, or you have to keep cutting calories and that is not what you want.

I'm also of the opinion that you should make your own shakes and bars. You can find great recipes for those sorts of things online, and you'll know exactly what's in them. It's cheaper, and far more delicious than processed, premade 'nutrition' shakes.

Here's a quick recipe for a protein shake/meal replacement, that tastes like a smoothie you'd get from a takeout place. It's highly variable too, you can put whatever fruit you want in it, but I'm just gonna list it the way I do it for convenience.

3/4 cup O% Greek Yogurt (Just shy of 20g of protein, for around 110-120 calories.)

1 peach, sliced and diced. (50 calories for a medium peach)

1/2 a banana, sliced (75 calories for half a medium banana)

1/2 cup frozen blueberries (40 calories)

Blend it all up, til it's nice and smooth!

So for about 285 calories you get a much more nutritious meal replacement than those drinks that are basically sugar and flavour with ground up multivitamins in it. You can cut some of the calories by reducing the amount of yogurt, or changing up the fruit. I also find this same recipe, sans banana, is great for breakfast when you don't blend it and just eat it like ice cream. The frozen fruit gives it a spectacular texture akin to everyones favourite treat. And this recipe makes a giant bowl that would probably come out at 500-600 calories if it were ice cream.

Hope this helps a bit. Good luck, and don't be too had on yourself. It can be counter productive! =o

Since you are in college you probably have no way of making your own meals so Meal replacements like whey protein is the way to go.

Its easy to make, get a Blender bottle (bottle with a metal spiral ball), buy bottled water, and every morning just scoop whey protein into blender bottle and mix. No Blenders/kitchen equipments needed and no refrigerators needed for fruits or dairy produce.

And don't be afraid to go out and jog/walk or in gym to do the same because the people who turn heads and look at you doing the same routine day after day aren't against you, instead they will be inspired by how much effort and willpower you are putting in.

oooh good idea AT! Since you're a student - adding instant coffee helps too, and a lot of grocery stores have sugar free coffee syrup in the same section. I take an "iced cofee" every day to work with whey protein.

I have never really did this diet before. It was recommened by my mother who used to work at Physicians Weight Loss center. She would tell me about how some clients would lose like 30 pounds in 2 weeks! I just am doing this to lose some wieght to kind of managable, maybe under 400 lbs. Today is the 7th day I have been doing this and it is pretty easy. I like it when I have a plan of what to eat. I like to not been given a choice. I go, okay shake now, shake later, 2 bars later and then chicken and salad with green beans for dinner. My knee and overall ache of pain in my body has made me reliaze I am getting to a place which could eventually lead to death. And after 7 days, my knee is feeling alot better. I got a LONG way to go, but I am looking at weight loss as will power and math. I am never hungry, as my 5 meals are spread out through the day. When ever I can actually weigh my self I will start to take pics. And I will see how much I do lose in a week. The scale actually reads only to 440, not 450 and I thought before. I think I am close and I will show it when I get under 440 lbs.

Cool I will look it up. Walking is the only thing I can really do right now. I have been drinking nothing but water, except for a few gatorades when I go fishing.

Walking is fine for now and ignore the ones who tell you to slow down on the weight loss.  You will lose more at the beginning and you need to take advantage of it!  There is nothing wrong with losing quickly, especially at the beginning.  The weight loss will slow down on its' own.  Good Luck!

Exercise is the best way to lose the weight too fast. Also take plenty of water is very important to reducing the weight...

You have to be careful with the exercise tho'.  At least for now.  You've heard of the phrase "work up an appetite".  Well, you don't want to do that!
