What do you think of religions influencing a diet? I watched this self help/documentary that had a couple of dieticians talking about how eating better organic foods affects a person?óÔé¼Ôäós personality. I thought it was pretty interesting, but I wanted to know what you guys thought. The name of the movie is called Discover the Gift and it?óÔé¼Ôäós directed by Demien Lichtenstein.

Yes I think a person's religion or beliefs can play a role. (I've not seen the documentary you mentioned).

Some religions have restrictions on certain meats (like pork and beef).

Also, three of the foundations for most religions, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, used to eat bread, meat, and greens together. They didn't separate protein from starches.

oh. I initially mis-read your question. silly me.

I read books about healthy eating which changed my beliefs about what makes food healthy or unhealthy.

For a while I lived in unease as I had this new belief but was still continuing to eat in my old unhealthy ways ("cognitive dissonance")

and then eventually I changed my eating to go with my new beliefs about healthy foods.

In the US the leanest group is the 7th day Adventist and they are primarily vegetarians. Jews are also lean and orthodox ones follow dietary laws. Jews also have high IQs on average.

The fattest are the fundamentalist Christians. The Bible belt is also the obesity belt. They have low IQs on average.

The Bible admonishes gluttony. The Catholic Church came up with the 7 deadly sins and gluttony is one of them. There are also 7 heavenly virtues.
 1. luxuria (lechery/lust)
 2. gula (gluttony)
 3. avaritia (avarice/greed)
 4. acedia (acedia/discouragement/sloth)
 5. ira (wrath)
 6. invidia (envy)
 7. superbia (pride)
I have argued that the obese are guilty of all these sins.

1, Many studies have shown that fat women are more promiscuous.

2. Gluttony.... that's a no brainer

3. Greed... I have observed them at all you can eat buffets. Holy Moly do they ever get their moneys worth. It's really vulgar.

4. Discouragement/sloth... A poster I am arguing with here is #%@&! bent on discouraging dieters.

5. Wrath... Check out what they are saying about MeMe Roth.

6. Envy... God help you if you are a skinny woman in a office of fat girls

7. Pride... The call themselves BBWs (Big Beautiful Women) or super sized BBWs SSBBWs. Do lean woman call themselves LBWs?

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_deadly_sins#Pride

Pride or hubris [..] identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to acknowledge the good work of others, and excessive love of self [..]

Hardly just the preserve of the obese

Many people are vain but a skinny woman can look good without a great hairdo, make up or nice clothes. They don't have the desire to be attractive, because they already are.

Yes skinny people are not usually envious of obese people's weight, but they can still have envy of other things, they can envy someone's job, spouse, money, car, house, etc. Envy isn't something that only fat people have.

Hi King Bling 7524,

JSABD and I have had a discussion about the bible's influence on the diet in this recent thread.

The discussion/debate about the bible's role in diet starts about halfway down the page, starting with the first July 15th post, continuing up till today (July 16th).

Reading it might help answer your question (or it might not).
