Hello, this is my first post here. I am sorry if this isnt in the right place, if it isnt tell me where to go and ill repost it their. This is a pretty big website with alot of information, its really nice. Now i told myself i wouldnt do something like this, because im not that big of a person. But i got on the scale last night at the doctors office and gained another 15 pounds from a couple months ago. Now before you think im gaining 15 pounds every 2 months let me tell you a little back story.

Over the past 2-3 years, getting more to 3 years now. I have had 3 back surgeries, i had pilonidal cysts. I am only 21 so i know i can do alot more with my life and stuff. But this has and still is leaving me bed written to where exercise is not that acceptable. I weighed around 165lb 3 summers ago. I was playing basketball every day, feeling good. but i kept feeling like i was getting cramps in my back and that i just needed to stretch it all out because it felt tight.

Anyways after a couple months of that they figured out it was the cysts, which i knew it was but nobody would believe me. Anyways after my first surgery i couldnt really walk. Deciding on when to go to the bathroom felt like a life or death choice sometimes because i had such a big incision and wound that walking, bending over, or just laying anywhere that wasnt my stomach felt like torture. Anyways, i ended up having a second surgery that required a wound-vac for 3 months. and it didnt heal right so i still couldnt do any exercising. I tried, i really did, i would try to go play basketball or golf but i would end up ripping a 4 inch gash in my back and have to go get silver nitrate in my back which burns it together. So for 45 minutes of basketball i spent 2 weeks for it in bed.

Well this last December i needed a third one, and i havent been able to get out and do anything, i have been trying to play the new kinect, but i knew i was still hurting more than i should. So i went to the doctor yesterday and it looks like i might be needing a 4th surgery, but when i weighed myself i was 240lb's. Which is nearly a hundred pounds i have gained over the three years of not being able to exercise.

Anyways, knowing that i cant exercise for more time. i dont want to gain more weight. Over the past month or two i have been trying to eat healthier. Which i dont actually eat that bad anyways, but i have been trying to change out my lunches of say grilled cheeses/fajitas/homemade french bread pizza's with celery/carrots/and pb&j. I also found some small bowls that you just put water in and in the microwave and have a huge bowl of pasta. I looked at the calories and sugars and they arent that bad for me. Its just hard to eat stuff that is healthy, because everyone else in this house eats nothing but brownies, honey buns, chips, and frozen pizza's really.

My drinking habits are pretty good i believe, i have not drank one pop/soda/cola *which ever you want to call it* for well over 8 years. Kind of a choice i told myself i would try to see how long i would go when i was 13, ended up being this long so i dont drink them and managed to drop close to 35lb's that year. All i drink is sweet tea, kool-aid,v8 splash. Thats about it, i used to drink Gatorade but i burnt out on it.

Anyways to the whole point of this thread is, what would you do if you were in my position. I want to eat healthier, but i dont really know what types of food are "healthier". I obviously cant excercise so eating better is my only option really to drop some weight until all of my back problems are fixed. My self esteem is shot, i feel very fat knowing how much i weigh and my will power is gone too knowing i cant do the proper thing of exercising. I know my case is one in a million, but i could really use some kind of help as to what i should do on my next move.. I feel pretty hopeless seeing what everyone else is eating and know my choices for dinner are pretty much at their disposal since there is 3 of them and 1 of me. So what would you do if you were in my shoes? Thanks to anyone that answers this, it means alot

To lose weight you need a calorie deficit. Chose all or at least most of your foods from the following food groups

vegetables
beans
fruit

you will be able to feel satisfied on fewer calories than with other types of food, so you will be able to eat fewer calories and lose fat even without exercise

foods at the wide base of this pyramid are eaten in larger quantities than foods at the narrow top.

Ok that helps a little I guess. It shows me what to eat more of. But I don't know what's in those specific categories that I can eat since when I see fruit I only think of apples bananas pears and cherries since that about all I like. I'm ok with trying new things but I don't know anything new to try

Take a walk down your supermarket's fresh produce isle (or frozen vegetable cabinet) after all no point in discussing it if it is not available for sale, and pretty much everything is good for you.

To further sub-classify foods, check out the chart on this page:

I used to not like abunch of fruits and vegetables as well, would only eat lettuce, apples, peaches, and sometimes a tomato or two.  I have started to change my diet and now am eating more and more from the wide base of the pyramid.  You will be amazed at how much you will enjoy these new fruits and vegetables, I know I did.

Have started eating grilled chicken salads which are only about 350 calories, soups that are 200 calories, grilled chicken sandwhiches and other types that are only 250 calories, and in a little over a week i have managed to lose 10 pounds. Im pretty excited, i still have 70 to lose but i think i can do it. Thank you
