If you divide plant-foods into 4 sub-groups: vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains.
Then beans and lentils (and sometimes peas too) count as legumes (pulses is another word for them). In general they tend to be a bit more calorie-dense than other vegetables (typically more than 50 calories per 100g) and usually have around 25% of calories from protein.

I was always fascinated with the vegetable corn. Dry it and it's a grain; pop it and it's... well, I don't have a clue! Something you eat at movies.

Sweetcorn is one variety of Maize, but in general the same applies to both: they are both grain/cereal crops and hard when harvested late in the season - but are soft and edible like a vegetable (sweetcorn, baby corn) if harvested early in the season.
When harvested as a grain, they are indeed used for popcorn (a whole-grain!), ground into flour ("cornmeal") or, just the little white tips where the starch is found are ground into "cornstarch" which is used for thickening.
Mind you, search for "grain legumes" on the web and you may find a different classification.

Nir, I don't know what you do for a living, but you should consider becoming a nutritionist or some kind of food scientist! When you know your stuff, you really know it!
And I'm glad I now know what pulses are -- I've seen it in your posts and have been meaning to ask.

| What do I do for a living? I think my secret is out, I mis-spend large portions of my work-time (IT - software developer) learning about dieting and nutrition, instead of working :)
