Just thought I would post my experience from last week.
My family went on a short vacation to the Gulf coast - 4 days of aquariums, theme parks, historical tours and the beach. Typically in these situations, in the past, it would have included some binge seafood dining as well. When we hit the road Ill admit I was worried about not finding the time or opportunity to exercise and facing unusual choices in my diet. (Im maintaining after a 60 lb loss by the way, reaching my target weight about 3 months ago).
Im happy to report that it was a little challenging but I managed to do pretty well. I woke up a bit early each morning and took a run (two of these were on the beach at sunup which was breathtaking) and did a few exercises before bed each night. One of the runs was pretty challenging as our hotel was in the center of a large city but questioning the hotel staff led me to a nearby park, only a couple of miles away which served nicely.
As far as eating went, it annoyed my spouse a bit but I stuck to salads when at resteraunts and kept some healthy snacks in the car between meals to keep the hunger edge off. Sure, we stopped for icecream, fast food and the regular vacation pitfalls but I managed to avoid participating with alternatives like fruit-cups or what have you. I indulged one evening with a broiled sea-food platter but left the hushpuppies and potatoes untouched.
All in all I feel pretty good about it, I returned with no noticeable change in my wieght at all.
Only down side to this experience was the complaint by my spouse that by not eating with the gang I sort of cast a shadow on the fun at times. She was pretty dissapointed I couldnt take a break for a meezily couple of days and just enjoy myself. Going on vacation but not eating anything special, not sleeping in and not indulging seemed counter productive to her. She may have a point as Ill admit it wasnt as fun as it could have been constantly reigning myself in.
Still I accomplished what I set out to do.
