I started a weight loss regime on Feb 1 of 2010. (1000 cal and 2 hours working out/day)

I lost 60 lbs in about 4 months and havent had any trouble keeping it off so far. I get lots of comments, am more active than ever (running a 10k in about a month) and my doctor is thrilled, taking me off all my previous medications (colesterol, blood pressure etc.)

Sounds great I know but Im beginning to realize the sacrifice this is going to take for the rest of my life to maintain. Im extremely dedicated, having no intention or even the temptation of returning to my previous bad habits, but I cant get over this wierd feeling of being picked on.

I feel left out of life somehow because I cant eat. People at work get doughnuts, I dont. My family goes out for mexican food, I cant participate. The Church has an icecream social, I watch. etc.

Honestly, Im not tempted all that much, most of my previous favorite foods make me a little nautious now to be frank, but Im depressed. I lost 60 lbs, look great without my shirt for the first time in years, feel better than I did when I was 30 (Im 46) and Im depressed.

DID NOT EXPECT THIS AFTER SUCCESSFULLY WINNING THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE.

Help?

I suppose moderation is the key. Have that donut, but just have one. Then consider that your calories for that 3-4 hour period. Normal eaters can enjoy things every so often, but they don't overindulge. I guess thats the tricky bit for people who love food and aren't satisfied with just the one donut.

First congrats on the loss !!!!!!Since we dont know what you stats are we cant tell how much to eat to maintain. I would be careful at first being that you only 1000 seems low . If you worked out 2 hrs a day you could have eaten more then that and still lost weight. Slowly raise your calories so you dont pile on weight. As for maintaining what I did was count calories my for what my maintance amount was. I did that for about 4 months after that. Since then I just dont have big servings and stay active. I have what I want I just have smaller portions and try to doing something everyday. I also think about where I was and tell not going back there.  I put 20lbs back after my knee surgery which left me highly inactive for 3 or 4 months . Since then I haven't gained anything still at 184 and this is with just trusting myself

As far as stats go.. hmm   Im a 46 y/o male, large framed 6'0", not standing at 196 lbs. I started this journey at 260. My body fat was around 28% back at New Years and at last reading was 8.2%.

I burn about 1000-1500 calories during my workouts - rotating swimming, jogging, elyptical, biking and tai-bo with one or two hours a week in weight training.

My initial diet was a 1000 calorie a day max, but ive attempted to increase it to the 1250-1500 range once I hit my target of just under 200 lbs.

As stated, Im feeling great - my wieght fluxuates about 8 lbs or so (mostly water Im sure as it drops in the afternoon after working out to low 190s and peeks in the evening before bed near or just over 200)

Im expecting a little weight gain as I incorperate the weight training into my regime. I was an avid wieght lifter years ago and still carry some of that muscle but the weight drop has revealed the need for some firming and filling in of flappy skin here and there.

All seems great on the surface but if I have to be honest, Im not happy. The food and exercise thing completely dominates my thinking - its an obsession and not a pleasant one. I feel like a freak at the circus with my family and friends as they sit and watch TV at night while I crank out another 600 calories on the bike or munch on some celery while the wife makes sundaes.

I hear the comment on moderation and portions, but honestly, Im TERRIFIED of putting the weight back on to the point of extreme guilty feelings when I indulge just a little. (Not to mention the stomach ache - probably psychological I know.)

How does this deprivation become NORMAL?

1) Once you have gradually cranked up calories you should easily be able to maintain your weight at 2150 calories with no exercise (more calories if exercising) so obviously now is the time to week by week slowly increase calories.

2) My suggestion is that you base your menu on very healthy food choices, but allow yourself small controlled portions of whatever foods you are missing or feel deprived of.

3) I would recommend you read http://tinyurl.com/EatRightFree healthy eating has the double benefit that you should satisfy your physical hunger, reach and maintain a slim weight and live a longer and healthier life with respect to chronic diseases.

4) If you feel the way you feel about food is unusual, you could check out whether a support group is available in your area. Try one of these podcasts for an idea of what to expect http://www.oa.org/podcast/

I was your weight when I started my journey and I lost 100 lbs by eating around 1700 and I'M around 5"11 at the time 38 yrs old. Even when I was close to my goal I never adjusted my calories cause by the end I was a workout machine :) LIke Nir said slowly  get your calories up to what he suggested. Yeah at first when do the maintain thing you do feel guilty I did. I then learned over time it is ok to indulge just keep the workout routine going. It won't happen over night took me months . You are more in tune with your body then probably you have ever been so you will know what to do if needed. If all  else fails listen to nir  he wont steer you wrong

One way to look at it... you have something they're missing out on -you have your body back. Yes you can enjoy a break now and then...just be careful because the bulge is often the result of many"just this once" moments.

Congrats on your loss. Everytime I begin to lose motivation, I pick up a 30 pound dumbell in each hand and walk around with it to remember what it was like to be carrying dead weight around.
